Hogarth

…I notice that y’all highly recommend the books of Andrew Loomis- and I’ve downloaded several of his books; and am studying them. But how do you rate his books as compared to Burne Hogarth’s books? Obviously you don’t rate them as highly as Loomis’; since you do not mention them at all; but HOW inferior do you consider them?

…The last time I had some money; I bought copies of all Hogarth’s books; and I’ve been working my way through each of them; copying the greater part of the drawings; under the impression that studying Hogarth- and life drawing too; of course, would be a big step toward becoming a better artist. Have I wasted time and money?

…I have my own opinions about this; but want to hear what y’all’s opinion is- particularly Lunatique.

…By the way, this is my first post; though I’ve been studying your forum for awhile. There is some very good artwork here.

…Thanx. RVM45

I have no experience with Hogarth, but no practice is ever a waste. There is no “best” method set in stone. If you find a method useful, then there is no reason not to use it. Different methods will be useful in different situations, so study whatever methods you can find. You don’t have to use them all at once.

There are basics that most people are familiar with, and that is what you are going to find in 99% of the books out there.

Get the basics down flat, experiment with different kinds of marks and effects, study the world around you, and when you like something you see figure out what makes it tick.

well, Marko Djurdjevic learned his anatomy with Hogarth’s Dynamic Anatomy, and, well look at his stuff at sixmorevodka.blogspot.com

I was just about to say that. However, each of us have our own ways and while Hogarth do know much about dynamic anatomy he don’t teach realistic proportions. This is where Marko really aced it, while early age he learned anatomy he did A LOT of studying of real life. Not drawing from real life but STUDY with his eyes.

Vilppu, Hogarth and Loomis are three great gurus we have a lot to learn from.
