WIP THREAD

DESCRIPTION
This is the third of 3 models I finished for this challenge. It’s Pumpkinhead, created for the movie with the same name, directed by Stan. In his hand, a motorcycle chain. Watch the movie to know more about it.

Details:
100% poly painted in Zbrush. Base mesh modeled in Maya, imported in Zbrush for rapid prototyping, retopologized in Maya, back to ZBrush for detail reprojection and further fine detailing and posing using Transpose Master. No images were used for texturing, only regular alphas. The final mesh has about 12 million polys but it was rendered with one subD level less, at 3 million polys, imported directly to Maya. No displacements nor normal maps/bump used. Everything is pure geometry. Rendered in Mental Ray with 4 area lights. FastskinSSS shader used. Only color map and cavity map used (cavity plugged into the ambient slot). Render time: about 25 minutes each, on a Dual Quadcore + 8GB RAM, running Maya 2008 and Zbrush 3.1

I had a blast. Congrats to everybody who managed to finish and thank you all who stopped by my thread to say hello.

Cheers,
-Kris

Category: Single Creature

Tribute to Stan Winston: April 7, 1946 – June 15, 2008
May his work continue to inspire us all, rest in peace.

This project was in conjunction with my Hard Suface Modeling class. Our goal was to have an entry in this contest. I chose to do the Terminator because he is one of my favorite characters, plus I can never watch the movies enough =]

The process: This entry was a very big experience for me (talk about upping your skillset from one model). I originally thought I was going to take this to zbrush for some nice details, but in the end I decided not to. I just used Maya for the modeling and mentalray for rendering, Photoshop to composite the renders.

Software used: Maya, HDRShop, mentalray, and photoshop.
Total Time: 31 hrs.

From beginning to end I have enjoyed the experience and all the great people here at cgsociety, everyone is great! The talent is very high here, I’d like to thank everyone again for all the c&c to help my model the best it could be.

Cheers! -Tim

TITLE: T-rex Attack Scene
CATEGORY: Diorama

Ok, My work is finished. I’ve worked a lot on these days to complete my scene, because on september i’ll have many university tests, and i won’t be able to work on this project.

Some words about my work:
It represents, as many of you know, the first encounter of the T-rex at Jurassic Park. We are near the T-rex zone and the electrical power is off. The t-rex fence has no electricity and this prehistoric creature can freely attack the cars who are carring the visitors(Alan Grant,Lex and Tim,Gennaro,Malcolm).

I mainly tried to recreate the atmosphere and the look of the original scene.
I’ve taken about 3 weeks to complete the image. I’ve used Maya for most of the work,
Zbrush to sculpt and detail, and photoshop to make the specular, color and diffuse maps.
Here’s a link to the wip:

I hope you’ll like it.

Comments:
this is my first HMC, first part of two: The Endoskeleton. i chose it because i want to learn to do semi-hard-surface in zbrush. The bust itself was modeled from Sideshow Toys’ version of Endoskeleton

link here:
http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=83331

except for some basic cylinders which was done in 3ds Max, pretty much everything else is in zbrush which i intended to,

the biggest hurdle with this model is probably the poly count, which the total of the parts combined is around 22 million polygon. i had numeruos crashes when i do changes of subtools, dropping the model to the canvas for ortho renders itself had its share of crash

The second part of two: Terminator T800 battle damage. i wanted to learn how to do likeness and since i liked arnold it’s a great choice. i again chose Sideshow Toys’ version.

link:
http://www.sideshowtoy.com/?page_id=4489&sku=8318

The major obstacle with this model was achieving arnold likeness. the most laborous process was painting the wounds and bullet wounds, it gets quite boring after second day of doing the same thing over and over.

But all in all, it has been a great learning process. Thank you for everyone who has commented and helped me out during the making

Thank you.

Best regards,
Andrew

ps. sorry i had to split my post into two because i tried to put all the images onto one post but it didnt allow me to do so.

Hi everyone !!
In the year 1993, when the movie “Jurassic Park I” released, I was a kid and saw the movie on big screen. Those dangerous creatures with cruel behaviour, I had never seen those kind of scenes before in that time. So just became crazy from that time till today about Dinosaurs, specially the raptors !!

Remembering those amazing creations - I want to personally dedicate my entry to the great man who gave life to the creatures whom nobody ever seen, the man who amazed everyone by his work in the films those cannot be forgotten -

Stan Winston

This time I enjoyed a lot working on dinos, specially skin texture was very interesting and new to me so I learned very much from it. Now I realized that your first and second level of blocking should be very accurate and perfectly finished before you go to the next level. So nice experience again. :wip:

Best Wishes to all the participants !!

It’s crazy how Stan Winston created so many of the memorable movie creatures and characters I grew up watching! I wish I had the time and skills to have made some of my other favorites, and I’m proud to pay tribute to him with this Pumpkinhead model.

I really enjoyed working on this model, and this being my first HCM challenge, it was also a great learning experience. I highly recommend these challenges to anyone who wants to up their skills, seeing such a great standard upheld by everyone is a real motivator. I’ll definitely be participating in the next one too.

RIP Stan Winston. I can’t wait to see his work on the T-600’s in Terminator 4.

And cheers to all other participants, seeing your work was a real motivator and inspiration to me!

This was my first HMC and though I had first planned on making a Power Loader vs Alien Queen diaroma from Aliens, I decided that Alien Queen was too complicated to make in given time with Power Loader and Ripley. So I gave my attention on Power Loader.

I already used to love the design of this machine but as I inspected it for modeling, I realized how genious the whole mechanics of it was and how really workable it is.

This was a challenge that was so nice to watch, thanks to Stan Winston and all the other contributors.

I’ve observed HMC’s for a while now, and after catching this one a few weeks into it and seeing the work being done I felt compelled to join. The talent demonstrated on this challenge and the support of artists of all levels really made this a special one (IMHO). Also, I think Stan would have gotten a kick out of all artists and work from this challenge that was inspired by his legacy.

As for my piece, I see a lot that I want/need to fix (eyes, hair, etc) But i’m relatively happy with what I’m showing considering the amount of time I was able to give it. I learned a ton working on this and from observing the other artists. This HMC got me to finally get off my butt and participate, and for that I’m grateful.
