HMC #46: Movie Tribute – Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5

#1

This is my first challenge here on CG Society and my first post. My friend told me about this challenge so I thought I would give it a try. For this challenge I choose to create the iconic Aston Martin DB5 from Golderfinger in 3ds Max. Below is a shot from the movie of the vehicle.

I will follow up this post with my references as I continue to research the vehicle.

After doing extensive research, I was able to pull together my references for modeling James Bond’s DB5. I should have some time this evening to work on modeling. I’ll post up some progress tonight.

Welcome in the Challenges,

beautiful car and good luck.

Well it has been a slower start than I would like on this model. I decided to start on the body of the car first so I could get a feel for where all the gadgets are going to be placed. Below you will see a couple of updated WIP screenshots that I took.

For this model I decided to start in the front of the car using a plan style of modeling. Here’s the beginning stages of my model.

Here’s another update where I added a little bit of detail to the front and started working on the back. The shape of the rear tail light housings took a little bit of finesse to get a good poly flow due to curves near the trunk.

Hopefully, I can kick this cold I have so I can make some more progress.

Welcome to the challenge. It’s a solid start

I just wanted to post a quick update of where I’m at with the model. Over the weekend I got a little bit more done. As you can tell, I got really focused on the front of the car and started to bring out the details. I also was able to finish modeling the wheel and tire. I found the rim to actually be quite challenging since the pattern of the spokes were not easy to identify. Overall, I believe it’s coming along quite well and I should have most of the body complete by the end of the week.

Here’s a closer up image of the front of the car. You can see the detail in the grill and headlights. I even made the license plate rotate like in the movie.

Also for some quick testing of the detail in the headlight lens, I did a very quick unwrap and test render with some basic materials. It came out alright, I need to do a little bit of tweaking but I think the detail will help reduce the time spent on the material creation.

Sorry for the delay in WIP updates. It’s been a busy couple of weeks with work and life, as you all probably understand. Well I was able to make some real progress on the model and it’s coming along quite well. I tried to put as much detail into the model as possible with the timeframe. Hope you all enjoy!

Here are some updated grayscale renders of the model.
