HMC #33: Masters Of Anime - Hayao Miyazaki - Porco Rosso

#1

Ill give it a try at this challenge

I’ve not worked in 3D in 10months and will use Blender, which I have no experience with other than a few low-poly assets I was commissioned to do last year.

I’ll start by modelling the red flying boat of the titular character of Hayao Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso film.

If I manage to do it and have enough time left I will attempt to model other planes from to movie or maybe create a diorama.

DIorama of his beach sound cool

#3

After a couple of false starts, I have the fuselage almost finished, only missing the gun ports openings and some panel line details:

I’m using this great thread on a plastic modelling forum, and the instructions sheet of that same model kit as reference.

#4

Looking good sofar. Can we get some better views?

#5

Thanks Airflow here’s some more progress:

More progress: struts, pontoons, some panel lines, windshield frame and started with the engine.

Engine mostly finished, I also modeled the little cockpit were Fio sat, but is too big, I’ll have to redo it.

Pretty sick modeling man, keep it up !!!

I like you renders as well !

#9

Thank you MoutMout!

The render setup is very basic, Yafaray clay mode with sunsky as the only light source.

I didnt manage to do much this time (wanted to model some of the cockpit interior for this update but alas, no time)

Only a few details: The rudder (modelled the fabric covered surface, but I think the render does not make it justice), some vents in the engine nacelle, the telescopic gunsight and the windmill generator.

Quick update, the engine itself, still missing some details:

nice “clin d’oeil”

#12

Thank you Scote, that easter egg appears in the movie when Piccolo shows Porco the new engine.

I’ve been working on the cockpit:

Hola Pablo,

Just discovered this thread and your fantastic model.
I am totally blown away!

A pity that Miayzaki abandoned the 3d trail again for his companys Ghibli movies (which is a mistake in my opinion ), he else might have used your model for a 3d sequel of Porco Rosso.

Any good advise from you as how to best get started with blender modeling?

I come from A:M patchspline modeling and just start to find my ways in the polygonmodelingworld like Z-brush shadowbox modeling and tried C4D also, which is not so easy modelingwise like your modeling looks, but maybe its just your great skills.

Bookmarked your thread and I am eagerly watching your progress.
Also the starting scene of Porco Rosso is a great choice, very moody.

How come you don`t have a website?
Can I see other work from you someplace?

mucha suerte!

Thank you very much Jost  I’m glad you like my model.

I dont think I can give you much advice on how to get started in Blender, I started using it by necessity. For a work I needed to submit the models in either Truespace or RWX format. Converting from Maya didnt work with the tools I had available. I also attempted to do the modelling in Truespace (the first modelling software I used) but couldnt get around the interface and it’s modelling method anymore.
So Blender was the remaining choice, it feels close enough to Maya (and in 2.5+ more so as you can choose a Maya interface profile which emulates Maya’s mouse navigation method), and could export in one of the required formats I needed.
Also, I do mostly poly and sub-surf modelling, never did any spline modelling (other than some pipes and stuff that can’t be done effectivelly otherwise)

Today’s update, finished with the plane:

After thinking a lot about what scene to do for the diorama, I decided to do the plane inside the Picollo workshop/factory, the night before the flight.
Porco’s plane is already finished, but theres a lot of ladders, fuel barrels, oil cans etc, around it.

Somehow your latest pictures all don´t show up on my browsers…

#16

Thanks for the heads up, my site had ran out of bandwidth. Images should show now.

BTW, I forgot in my last post, my site is available on my user profile, the URL is: http://www.solid-state.com.ar

#17

Images are working now.
That is going to be a cool scene.

#18

Seems the interest your work generates around here leads easily to exceeding bandwith…

#19

Thank you Wyatt, I hope so.

Jost, my site should be back online by tomorrow, dont expect too much tho

Some progress with the workshop: roof and and internal wall faces detailed, lamps added.

Nice work.) Like all the detail your adding.
