HMC 29: SciFi Icon - Deckard - Blade Runner.

#1

Hello guys.

I found out this challenge a couple of days ago, and decided to jump in and try to make Deckard from Blade Runner, one of my all-time favorites in this genre.
My goal is to recreate this pose, if possible with a full body sculpt. The tools of choice are Blender for base meshes and Zbrush for sculpting, although I may try other apps for specific tasks.

Started today by creating a base mesh for the head in Blender (somewhat ugly):

And then I went into ZBrush for the sculpt of the head. It’s still a work in progress, I have some difficulties with the proportions seen directly from the front, but I hope I’ll get it right soon. If the face and head are recognizable, I will feel that half of the battle is won

Sweet. One of those flicks I probably watch more than I should. Looking forward to see where you take it, & best of luck.

#3

Deckard was my first choice for this challenge but I figured he would be a popular choice. Good luck! :applause:

#4

haha nice choice man good start keep on working on him cant wait to ssee this progress

#5

spindraft: Thanks dude. There’s no such thing as seeing that movie too many times

soldazzle: Thanks  actually my first choice was Batty, but changed my mind because Deckard is more iconic, besides, I wanted to sculpt Harrison Ford. Just put on a fedora hat and instant Indiana Jones, so it’s 2 for the price of one, lol
Actually, I though that someone else would do something from Blade Runner, but I haven’t seen an entry related to that flick, weird…

elmooo: Thanks bro. Judging by your warrior on the other contest, your entry will rock, can’t wait to see what lies ahead for us!

So, here’s some more work trying to match the likeness. The hair is temporary, just to have another reference on the head.

Cheers,

Here’s another update:

#7

And here’s another update on deckard’s head. Maybe it will be the last update for a while, for a couple of days I will be away from my computer, travelling

C&C are welcome, of course

#8

I was going to say his forehead sloped back too much but looks like you fixed it. I think his lips might be a little tight but other than that, very good start.

#9

Hello WyattHarris, thanks for your comment, I’m glad you like it.

About the lips, it’s funny you mentioned it, because when reviewing my reference pics, I noted that the mouth looked like it was a wee bit too close to the nose, so I lowered it, I guess a side effect is the tightening of the upper lip, especially.
When I’ll return to Deckard I’ll have this in mind

Cheers.

#10

The likeness is coming along really well.

#11

Hello Ben, thanks for your comment.

Here’s another small update, after some days away from the computer, I’m slowly returning to normal working speed :stuck_out_tongue:

Of course, tweaks are necessary, but I think I’ll change focus and return to Blender to create base meshes for the shirt, tie, hands and pants, for now.

Cheers

#12

Started work on the clothes and hands basemeshes, and tweaked a bit in ZBrush, trying to get good proportions. I won’t focus much on the shirt, because most of it will be hidden by the overcoat.

Cheers.

#13

ya you need to work on those proportions. The torso needs to be longer, arms longer, hands larger and neck shrinked a little. I do think you have captured the likeness which is great. Good job so far.

#14

Thanks Speed87, you’re right on your comment. I adjusted some proportions (more adjustments are needed, probably I’ll make them in Zbrush) and made more basemeshes in Blender. I believe what’s missing is the pant’s belt and the gun, that one will require some time eheh

#15

that is great!! Good adjustments! Keep going

#16

Thanks Speed87. Another update; I’ve imported the basemeshes into Zbrush and started marking out some details on the trenchcoat and shrunk the shoes, I noticed they were bigger than the head :stuck_out_tongue:

And a close up of the head

Obviously lots of work is still needed on the clothes

I was thinking of posing him on a different pose than I initially thought, I want to put him on a dynamic pose, pointing the gun or running, some options:

The pose from the logo

or this one (there’s another photo showing the same stance in full body, but I can’t find it now :P)

What do you think?

#17

In these last couple of days I’ve been working on Deckard’s gun/blaster, it’s more complex than I initially thought, thankfuly I got tons of reference images from the Internet

Here’s a preview of the blaster (mind you that it’s still in progress, some parts are missing):

Some areas will be sculpted for very fine details, like text imprints on ZBrush.

Cheers,

#18

The gun is looking really good. I think on the body you could do with just refining some of the volumes at a lower subdivision level to fill out the forms of the jacket etc. There’s a little lumpiness in there at the moment, mainly on the back and the lower portion of the jacket.

#19

Thanks Ben

About the trenchcoat, yeah, basically I haven’t really worked on it, just marked some areas to act as landmarks. Unfortunately the best way I found to make the striations on the trenchcoat’s collar was to export a mid-rez model of it to Blender, extrude faces and re-import. The problem is that I lost the lower levers of detail, but I have an idea of how to get them back; reimport the older trenchcoat, and Zproject just the details of the collar, when I finish the blaster I will return to Deckard, with yor comments in mind ;).

Cheers!

I’ve been working more on the gun, and it’s almost done. I still have to clean up some geo and close some holes, but it’s almost there:
