This is going to be my first real model. i hope to learn much from this.

HMC #29: Sci-Fi Icon - Qui-Gon Jinn
Started working on the head today. I havent yet touched the ears. I cannot find many good references of Liam Neeson during the period of filming star wars episode one; he has changed alot since then.

please crit.
I started on the lightsaber today, this is my first real go at ‘hard surface’ modeling so the mesh is very dense, I intend to remodel it later on, but iam happy with the result.

Started to block out the clothes and possibly the worst hair/beard in the world. It makes me chuckle when i look at it. I will probably make the cheeks fuller.
The face looks patchy from afar, what can i do to even it out or will it go away when i go into max?
Also, what should i do now that i have the base clothes done? it is hard to work with it in zbrush; it just doesnt look right. Ive been looking at other peoples HCM threads they have nice wrinkles and stuff so i was hoping some of you can share your process, please.
Also when modeling accessories and such belts, pockets and straps in boots/belts etc how would you go about doing it?

I’m going to use max to hopefully get more likeness, but again its funny how in most references he doesnt look like himself maybe its just my bad eyes. Also the details just seem to wash away from the zbrush models which is kind of good and bad, maybe its just my render settings.
Iam going to start working on the eye next and read some tutorials on the ears then fix it up because its too complex to model right now.

Still working on the head because it doesnt look like qui-gon at all. Its tough.
The eyes are just a place holder.

Sort of finished with the eye material, it still needs better bump map, textures and the shape needs to be changed because the spec is picking up on it wrong. The eye is reflecting a light and two geometric objects in the scene.

The lights were washing out the face so i have deleted it. any crits on how i could get some likeness would be much appreciated.
Thanks for replying to my thread! aha, anyway for the eyes i was follow this tutorial http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/max/young-girl/girl2.html
i got the environment map from
I still have to add some of them red veins and edit the textures

here are the settings for mine:
The maps are almost identical in style to the ones in the tutorial

I wanted to do this icon, but this is really looking nice. The eyes look great, thanks for sharing the info on the eyes.
I havent much had time to work on this as iam trying to learn the basics of 3d modeling, lighting and rendering instead. first time texturing, I dont know why but the images are so washed out in renders, and do not pick up specular highlights ( it is very diffused ).
How can i produce the indirect lighting from an octa light bank?
I also tried to generate a displacement map but it does not work at all. There are no details in the map. I was wondering if anyone had any tips because right now iam just using a bump map but it does not really affect the lighting like displacement map would.
Also how can i really “up” the effect of the spec map? it really doesnt show when a texture is applied.

First time using hair and fur and it was a bad experience; it is causes so much lag issues and crashes also the render times are awful. Does anyone know how to decrease render times while keeping a decent level of quality?
I can’t render it because it keeps saying unloading geometry…
I’m going for the ‘drawing of the lightsaber’ pose. I will be sculpting the clothes and creating remodeling it.
Very rough, but it is just to give an idea of the pose any crits would be great
I don’t know about the lighting and rendering part, but I think you’re very far above “basic” modelling
Wonderful work!
Thanks your words of encouragement it means alot to me. Often we beginners get no feedback which makes it hard to correct our work, but it is understandable because the model/work is often so wrong its hard to critique in a way which is not discouraging or rude to the person.
Anyway, I think i will end it here because :
I lack the knowledge to make this believable
using hair and fur and making a vray light keeps crashing 3dsmax
I think this HCM allowed me to try something beyond my current capabilities. Reading some past WIP forum post i think alot of beginners try to model human heads before we have a grasp of the basics of modeling and this was my attempt.
I had to more than half the count of hair, lower the resolution, hair-pass and lower multi-strand count to prevent crashing. Lighting is from only skylight, but this was the result:

It sounds like you learned a lot by trying this, kudos for stretching yourself. This was great for me to read and learn from - in many ways. I hope to have the guts to post my own WIP shots someday, and it helps to learn from an open and gracious mind like yours.
For what it’s worth from an amateur, I think you captured a great deal of likeness in the majority of his face. Anyone can learn the technical stuff eventually, but I think you have a talent there for making him recognizable. Hope that made sense, and thanks for posting your stuff.
Thanks for replying and sorry for such a late response i have not checked HCM forum since ending this model.
I did learn alot just by trying something totally new and just experimenting; I think this is evident from all the questions i was asking during the process.
I hope you do post your WIPs in the future if not I can always have a look at them. Iam also trying to find someone to ‘level up’ with.
So if anyone is a beginner that has noone to learn with, msg me lol
Anyway, I think i will end it here because : I lack the knowledge to make this believable using hair and fur and making a vray light keeps crashing 3dsmax
hi! you were doing such good work and now you re stoping??? i mean how can you lack knowledge when you do all the things you did till now??? like sculpting, realistic eyes and skin??? i mean i was really enjoying your work and its a bit disappointing…
sorry i dont want to be harsh but really its strange to end such good work like that…
well hope you finish it and post here in the future
live long and prosper
