HMC #25: Leafy Seadragon

#1

First, I want to say that I am SOOOO excited for this challenge. Thanks Robert for putting it together. I’ve been wanting to put together an ocean/aquarium environment for a while so what perfect timing for it. I have only ever entered one other challenge, but unfortunately I didn’t finish it due to some unforeseen issues. This will be the first HMC I will enter.

For my entry I have chosen a leafy seadragon. These are one of my favorite sea creatures, along with the weedy seadragon and lionfish. Not sure what type of environment I’ll put her in, but I’ll figure that out as I go. Attached is an image.

What a beautiful creature. This will be a fantastic entry.

Welcome to the HMC popflier.

I can only echo Rage here: Astonishingly beautiful choice!

Looking forward to seeing how you handle it.

Cheers!

I hoped someone would do that creature, it’s truly a very interesting subject. This specie in particular show how well an animal can evolve to survive in it’s habitat.
Waiting to see more of this!

You are absolutely right! They have adapted so well. Their cousins, the weedy seadragon, I think are equally as interesting, especially in their coloring. They have these fantastic blue stripes and are speckled in the most beautiful way. (Probably would be a great texturing challenge.)

The weedy seadragon is in this below image. I am actually in the process of sculpting a weedy seadragon for another project. It’ll be fun to do the leafy one to join him.

I am absolutely not a rigging person, but I would love to find someone who could rig my leafy seadragon when finished. It’s a challenge for me to rig humans and rigging this would be beyond my scope. It’s incredible how they move. I wouldn’t have the first idea how to setup a working rig for it.

Very nice, I was close to doing this guy but hesitated because the challenge posting focused on motion and I came up with another idea. So I can’t wait to see someone else tackle this subject. Good choice.

Hey popflier,
great idea with the leafy sea dragon. a really beautiful creature. I am a rigger, and am also partaking in this challenge, but should you want a rigger to throw together a rig once you complete your model I’d be more than happy;-) I’m kinda entering this challenge to give myself an interesting creature to rig afterwards.
keen as to see how your model progresses,
Tim.

Thanks Tim! That would be fantastic! Yes, I’d love to have you rig this. I’m actually not too far from having the base model finished. Maybe once I’ve finished the base model I could send it to you to see if the edge flow is the way you would need it and we could go from there?

yeah cool. sounds good. it’s going to be a pretty interesting/unusua creature to rig. keen as to see the base mesh;-)

Tim.
