HMC 24 - Weta Workshop Challenge - Marlow

#1

I am going to take a stab at this challenge by creating the character Marlow from 30 days of night who is played by the actor Danny Huston. Not the most elaborate makeup job of all of WETA’s great works, but my favorite vampire character to date. I will be doing a scene which could allow for additional characters if I have time, but for now I just plan on making Marlow and a record player.

Here is my initial low poly head after some adjustments in zbrush. Now time to start adding some division levels.

#4

wow!

very nice start

#5

great base model indeed.
I just do think the mouth is too narrow. Should be wider.

cheers

#6

Made the mouth slightly wider although I wasn’t sure if you meant wider or more open. I’m probably going to open the mouth a little more when I pose as it seems, in the scene, he is trying to mimic a speaker for the record player. Here is an update after 4 or 5 sub-division levels.

I have a couple more structural things to work out then I’ll move on to detailing and hair.

looking much better.

And i meant wider indeed. The amount of how much it is open, also desides how wide it should be. But it looks good now.

Just have a problem with the top head. I think just above the ears should stick out a little more, and maybe then the top should be a little narrower.
So i think.
He does have a wide top head, but is caused by the head too. If you’ll add the hair it will be way too wide.

cheers

Added some detail to the head. Still have a little more like the eyebrows, but I haven’t decided if I’m going to just do the hair in zbrush or do something with hair and fur in max.

#9

Quick Update on the clothes. I started to sculpt and add detail to them and I’ll post it soon.

#10

i would say for now to sort of skip your detail pass on the face with all the high frequency noise and stubble and stuff.
i think if you spend more time working on stuff like major wrinkles and facial expression first, THEN do your detail pass, the model will turn out better.

if you modeled in some of the drool and blood splatters i think that would make for a REALLY cool model. drool and blood spalters is always way cooler than stubble and pores hahah.

I won’t add any more wrinkles or detail to the face because he is a relatively young character. The pose I’m doing for the head is fairly neutral as well so the only thing i’ll be doing is opening the mouth a little more and tilting the head because i really like the stoic look on the character’s face at that moment in the scene. I had considered doing some drool and still may if I can make it look right, but I may stay faithful to the scene and just add some blood.

Here is a small update on the clothing:

I’m not sure if it’s the coat and the loose shirt, but the body proportions seem off, imo. I think the arms and legs need to be longer. Nice work on the face.

#13

Thanks and you’re right about the proportions. I made some adjustments to both the scale and length of the legs but I also think the hands were too large. Here is an initial pose with the record player.

Great job, cloth folds are looking very natural. Maybe knee folding point should be just a little high. Keep it up.

Cheerio~
