HMC 24 - Weta Workshop Challenge - Lotr, Fell Beast and Morgul Lord

#1

Commanding the skies over the battlefields of Middle-earth during the War of the Ring were the terrifying Nazgûl, whose chief was the Witch-king, the Lord of the Morgul Vale. Riding upon the backs of huge Fell Beasts, bred in Mordor, the evil wraiths were their master’s eyes on the battle and his scouts in the hunt for the Ring. Upon his great mount the Morgul Lord rained terror down upon his land-bound foes, striking them down from beyond reach or chance of harm, for it was known to all that by the hand of no mortal man could he be slain.

I created a new Thread since I couldnt change the title of the old one. I’m gonna try and model this awesome piece. I’ll post a update on the foot-piece later today.

I’ve been working on the foot and rock-formation, I’m gonna start working on the Fell beast next.

Enjoying it so far, I hope everyone else is having fun too. It really looks great all the amasing projects people are doing at the moment. Regards Anders

#3

Looking good so far. But maybe a bit too blobby for rock? You got the main shape down. It just needs some sharper shards and cracks.

#4

I think you had a very good point there Brett, so I have been trying to alter it abit and also had time to work on a very wip basemesh. Here is the update.

Any input on the rock-base, is it better or still need work? any input appriciated
Regards Anders

#5

looking much much better now

#6

It’s looking much better. I’d suggest you make it a bit blockier, with sharper edges, like the jagged outcrop on the bottom left. Can’t wait to see the fell beast!

#7

great start.
But i’m my opinion you’re not obligated to even stick to the exact statue. I mean, you can put the creature basically on anything you want. Makes it more interesting.

Hope you got enough reference cause that beast rocks.

Cheers

#8

I moved the Fell Beast basemesh back and forth between 3ds max and Zbrush and here is what I got so far:

Gotta finish the head-harness and the mouth parts, then it should be good to go with regards to unwrapping and detailing.

#9

i think the shape of the head is kinda wrong. The head seems to have the same with and height of the neck. Maybe just a little bigger. Then the head shouldn’t be that long. It has a little head compared to the body.

Maybe, the lower leg part is also a bit too long. And the part above that a bit too thin.

Just my thoughts on the proportions.
Better be sure before you begin.

cheers

#10

Yep I am still tweaking the general shape of the basemesh. here is the latest update

#11

I’ve been working with the base mesh some more and started adding a bit of details. Still need some tweaking, but I think the overall shape is getting better. Need to fit in alot of sharp teeth and then I think I will try making the head gear and accessories soon.

Everyone keep up the nice work, there are so many great entries. Regards Anders

#12

Dont have much time to work on this project at the moment, but when ever I get a bit of time I try to get something done. I managed to get the head, teeth and helmet done. Small update, but atleast something

#13

added the chair for the rider and played around with the wings a bit more.

#14

i would recommend for your stones to use the planar brushes a bit more on them to kind of give them flatter shapes. right now they still feel a bit bloby.

#15

I am having a good challenge with that rockbase  I tried using the planar-brush and detailing it with softconcrete brush. I hope its better now, any input is appriciated.

#16

Been working on the rider, still very wip, but atleast I got started on him. Trying out different techniques learning along the way having a good time.

#17

I made the weapon he is gonna wield and did a fast pose of the hand. I think I’m pretty much ready to start detailing the whole model.

#18

Here is the model in its current state. I still have some ideas regarding textures and also a few more object-ideas for the scene. Something I can get done before the deadline

#19

Some texture work and a few new objects. Not sure how much more I can get done within the timeframe.
