Started the base mesh head today. I was spending too much time adjusting in Maya, so I am just going to move to zbrush to fix areas like the tiny ears, lack of eyebrow shape and other silhouette discrepancies. Crit is always appreciated.

a nice start with the props there - the urn looks very good
looking forward to this one!
looking at the head I’d say watch the eyebrow area in particular. right now it’s too retracted - when you compare the 3/4 views in your photos the eyebrows are much more pronounced.
First what version of ZBrush? Have you upgraded to 3.5?
I ask because in 3.1 this is the normal operation for HD. It masks out a circle that represents the highest level of polygons your computer can handle. This behavior is a bit different in 3.5 and I haven’t quite got my head around it yet. It still does the mask but seems to leave the other areas still visible.
However I wouldn’t expect the non HD version to be so blocky. Perhaps you should start sculpting at lvl 7 before moving to HD. I’m not really sure.
Intervain: Thanks for the reply. I tried to push the eyebrows further, but I think I still could go a little further with it. I am excited to see you start your piece too, that dress will be fantastic.
Wyatt: Thanks for your input about the zbrush stuff. No, I have upgraded to 3.5 yet because I am running a mac. Hopefully the mac version won’t take as long as last time to come out… You are probably right about the subdivision thing, I had no idea how it worked and was sad to find out I couldn’t do regular subdivisions after I went HD. I will avoid doing that so fast next time.
Here is an update to my face sculpt. It is better than last time, but there are still some things that need work. If anyone can help pinpoint particular areas it would help. And I decided to close the mouth too.

Hi Deanna, no problem with same sculpture, because I can use some other referances too for props and cloth, are you going to make same cloths for you.
anyways come to the update
props are lokking cool and good start too.
rigth now I can only say about Jaw, eyes and forehead, I think you should define the jaw line more in front view, your forehead have more curve to your sculpt in side view and eyes need more attention, rest is cool at this early WIP.
ve a nice day.
Arun: Thanks! Your observation/suggestions will help a lot. I also noticed that my chin in side view is too flat as well. About the clothing/cloth… My thoughts so far about the direction I will go are: probably not making the cape, moving the middle tie of fabric around and tying it in a big bow in the back, changing proportions/shape of the chest plate, also stylizing the sandals into high heel sandals, and have long cascading hair, pulled back.
RexDiem great start!
would u mind telling a little about how to did the detail in the vase . those nice patterns ! since i m also new to this field!
Soooo…just like Paul / robo3687, I also lost all my file for my face sculpt. I was thinking I was prepared because I save a ton of different versions of files. However, I am stupid and didn’t back up my laptop for 2 weeks. The night I am sitting next to a note that says “backup data before bed” it crashes and my hard drive is totally dead and chirps when turned on.
Well, lesson learned. Note to self: one month old computers can crap out of you, don’t be lazy, back up NOW when you think of it.
I might have the vase/props saved on my school’s computer for some reason…I lost a lot of work I needed for school too and will be making that up the next two weeks probably. Sigh.
Polymaster: I did a sketch closely following the designs in the photo reference, but made it flat (no perspective). I turned that quick sketch into a black and white (black background/white linework) document in photoshop, then imported the alpha, using drag rectangle and clay brush I carefully aligned it four times (for each section of design - I had 2 main repeating patterns) around the vase. hint: turn on x4 (or x8) symmetry and make a tiny dot where the center of the drag rectangle should go for each design.
Once the alphas were translated onto the vase I smoothed it out so I could barely see the designs. Then I masked in the entire design (using symetry x4 along the x axis) how you want the final to look. Just use the underlying sketch transfer as a rough stencil, use your own judgement on where all the design should go. After masking the whole design use the inflate deformer option till the design protrudes out. After that, happy sculpting.
I don’t know if this is the best way, but it worked pretty decent for me. If I didn’t explain this, let me know and I will try to explain better.
Agreeing with Wyatt. I hope you have time to get back in this. Very sorry to hear about the crash. Still almost a month to go. Good luck!
Hi ,I chose the theme of an elegant woman, maybe you should go take a look.
a nice start,I looking forward.
[left]Thank you everyone for your support and words of encouragement! I finally started over again today, did the base meshes for the face, hair, body, and shoes. I also did a over sketch to rough in changes I am making from the original sculpture. Some stuff is still weird (especially chest area), but onto zbrush next will help.
Sorry for the huge images.

Awesome re-progress :D. Glad to see you are still in it. Lookin forward to your new zbrush stuff. Mesh looks good and clean from what i can tell. I’m sure you will get it all lookin fine in zbrush.
lookin good so far, and it seems as though its better than your first go which is always handy…
i’m almost condering that for every model i do, that i work on it for a week and then delete it and start again…lol…
nice I do like the concept of the clothing with the high heels
- a nice spin on the roman costume… looking forward to the Zbrush
Nice work after your big case of bad-luck!
Only thing i noticed is that i find the body leaning a bit too much forward when i look at the legs. It’s like the model is almost going to fall over.
good luck on the progress.
