Fantastic model!
some great reference you made yourself there
HMC#20: Expressions - Tom the Friendly Troll
Haha this is great! Your sculpt looks cool, and those expressions are awesome. My favourite is silly. Be careful not to practice it too much, though, or your face will stick like that (or so my mother told me)!
No crits, but thought I’d drop by and leave a reply anyway. I like this thread. I haven’t posted because I’ve had nothing to say, but have been following your progress. If you’re anything like me, you enjoy the complements, but prefer the crits. I COULD have left a bunch of "THIS IS AWESOME"s, but then you’d end up like This:
Keep it up!
Thank you for the kind words, everyone.
Maggy: If only I had an eye for movement, trust me I’d make a lousy animator
RageofAges: That made me laugh, haha. Thanks
Here are the first two of the expressions, ‘pleased’ and ‘rage’. This is a lot of fun to do.

Actually, now that you’ve posted your reference, I have to say - the likeness is uncanny
Lookin great man.
I wasn’t sure if I was seeing things but there is a similarity, mostly in the mouth area but not the teeth.
Drunk and contemptible, excellent looks.
Continuously great work here!
At least from me, there’s a “but” attached to the compliment. The mouth/nose areas look great, but I think you need to work on the eyes quite a bit more. Especially on “rage” they dont really communicate, if you ask me. He lacks intensity and looks rather indecisive right now, kinda like he’s still deciding whether or not to be really peeved. On “pleased” he looks more stoned than anything else. Well at least to my eyes. It’s all in the eyes.
Cheers and keep up the great work.
hey jelmer!
-continueing the great work. i have to agree with felix (therazorsedge) about the eyes, though.
for “pleased”, maybe tieing in the brow over the nose a bit more. arching them upwards a bit too, would help conveying the expression better.
for “rage” i think you should pull up the cheek folds near the corner of the eye more. maybe squeeze in the cheeks a little (just beneath the cheekbone). to make the mouth look more tensed open.
hope you understood my quirky explanations.

Ah… hiervoor dus. GO JELMER!
For the Rage it might be cool to drop the lower part of the eyebrows a bit more over the eyelids, to get a nastier look.
Really cool.
Model looks great wrinkles and all. Ogre a nice choice, obviously popular :buttrock:
Won’t comment much on expressions since maybe I admit to still being
a bit of a newb on them myself.
Yes I know! I should’ve been working on some more expressions, but got a little sidetracked and did a few render tests instead. Got to keep it fun
If I have time after some more expressions I am thinking of texturing him.
Cheers for all the feedback by the way guys, I’ve already looked into it and did some fixes. Update soon!

Amazing work jelmer
could you please tell us about the rendersettings . it would be useful.
I really like this guy. He is very likeable even in this state right now. The rendering is great. I’m really looking forward to the next expressions. How many polygons does the entire model have right now?
Polymaster: The renders were done in Mental Ray, using a combination of image based HDRI lighting. ambient occlusion and some area lights. I rendered out these three passes and combined them in Photoshop. I’ll go a little more in depth on this later.
Kogen: The mesh is sitting at 13400 triangles and has been subdivided up to 5 levels in Zbrush for the detailing.
Disgust is up next.

Hi Jelmer,
I was watching this little fella’ and couldn’t keep me not telling you how good this is.
i think this model is fantastic, your expressions are just great!
But there is a little thing that bothers me, i think you should play with the position of the head too. Like in your last update: the grin is perfect, but when you disgusted you turn your head a little sideways and tilt it back a bit. You want to get -from what disgust you- as far as you can.
I’m not sure it helps, at that level where you are you don’t really need my help…
and it could be a nice concept to have all the expressions in one head position, making the expressions believable just with the face. That could work too (and watching your stuff i’m sure it will work).
Well, keep up the good work!
