HMC # 20 - Expressions: Me, Myself, and the Inner Zombie

#61

Thanks Jmart and I agree with you. I’m actually having a little difficulty with my displacement distance in Modo. Too high and everything pops too much-as you can see in the previous WIP, too low gives me good results in some places, poor in others. The Modo shader is just stand in, for now, with spec is completely turned off as I find it distracting. I’ll figure it out, though. I’m more concerned right now with the expressions than with the render. 1 week left, 14 expressions to go :wip:

Going well bud,

Now Power through those expressions!!!

#63

I like it man, although I’m looking forward to the happy/love/silly end of expressions

I actually think the white shader is working well enough. I don’t see that you’re losing that much detail - the detail on the forehead is just getting blown out from the lighting, it’s not that it isn’t there. If you want to pick it out some more, just add a bump or normal map on top of the displacement. Also you can take a cavity map out of zbrush and stick that on as a diffuse as a kind of quick hacky way of making the detail pop.

#64

Thanks Lord McGoat. I never thought of using the cavity map that way. Will give it a whirl tonight.

Model is looking great. I love the idea. I hope you have time to get to expressions. I’ve been lookin forward to this one.

#66

Thank you Tim. I appreciate the encouragement. BTW I just noticed you work at Bethesda. I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on the incredible work. The depth of the games put out from this studio never ceases to amaze me. Please pass on the message to the rest of the team as well.

For this update: I’ve revised Rage a little, putting more work into the mouth area. I found it a little deadening to the entire expression. Also I’ve sculpted Surprised.

more to come tonight.

Flirty: This one was awkward. Just picturing a Zombie flirting is tricky.

#68

Hehe, you’ve got a purely rotten and funny zombie, pal :D. If you have time for it or plan to go back some other time, give him a black and very thick eyebrows, might give him a lil bit of character, keep going

Have fun!

#69

Oooh thanks for that suggestion Menthol. If I get time I will definitely add some eyebrows. I may just do a Photoshop Paintover at the end.

For now, Here is Happy. I just noticed while posting that the inner brows need to go up a little more. Will have it updated by next WIP.

Ill try and get one more done tonight, but Im kinda expression’d out, and my face hurts from making funny faces all night

Rage. These are looking fantastic man. What an improvement. Well done. I’m having a good laugh at seeing a zombie laugh and flirt.

#71

HAHA, Shocked looks like, “I was about to eat somebody but my mom who isn’t yet zombified caught me and now I don’t know what to do! Awkward moment, sorry mom.”

Also, I have to admit that I don’t work for Bethesda Softworks unfortunately. Believe me it’s been a dream of mine growing up relatively close to it. I work for the National Institutes of Health which is in Bethesda, MD. I’m only about 6 miles away from their studio though. Maybe one day I’ll get a job there. For now I’m enjoying all the science!

Anyway, cheers! The emotions are looking great. I’m really regretting not doing more body for my model. I doubt I have time now.

#72

@Brett. Thanks for the compliment, my friend. Your thread is an inspiration, and one of my favourites on this challenge.

@Tim: Lol, A Zombie getting busted by his mom. That’s priceless. And as for Bethesda, I had no idea there was a city called Bethesda, which is where the confusion came in. Would be nice to work for them, though

Here is my first expression tonight. I wanted more done by now, but I have been playing with lighting and renders after getting some guidance from jboskma’s friendly troll thread. I’ll apologize in advance if I stole your color palette, but it was actually set up that way before I started playing with better lighting.

Here is Lusty:

#73

Looking great, Joel!

The last one is especially creepy! lol

Skol!

#74

Thanks Felix. Must be the new Lighting for the Render on the last one. That and I added some spec to the material so it might “POP” a little more.

Tell me something please. What does it mean when you sign your post “Skol!” ?

Here is disgusted. Disgusted in the sense that he’s thinking (while looking at another zombie):
“You’re not going to COOK those brains, are you”!

-Rage

#75

lol “Skol” is Swedish for “Cheers” as in:beer:. I like to sign off like that in different languages.

Kanpai! (Japanese)

#76

Ahhhh, gotcha.

I’m sorry Mr. Zombie. There are no brains for you today.

Sad:

#77

New Expressions are lookin good. You are making pretty swift progress. As for Bethesda, yeah, it’s surprising that such a creative influential video game just named themselves after the city that their office was in. Then again, I guess most people don’t know that they started off with an office in Bethesda, MD.

#78

Man, these are great, you pulled out all the stops. Very funny set of emotions.

#79

Thanks guys.

Last one before I go to bed. Enjoyment.

Woosh you’re churning through these, good job! My gut reaction to sadness was that he’d just noticed that his manhood had, like the rest of him, finally given in to decay. That’s not a crit, I think that’s a fair reason to be sad.
