HMC #20 - Expressions - Fantasy Character

i almost agree

i think what’s missing is the lifting of one eyebrow while the other is going down a little.
The eyebrow that pulls down a little should be the one at the side of the lip that is pulled upwards. Due to the muscles of that side that contracts.

You also have a little more wrinkles under that eye, but maybe the eye needs to close just a little too.
I think it’s all these little details that will make it just great.

Hey Magdalena,

I don’t know if you consider bending the head sides/onward/backward? It might help you  Maybe for confused, try bending to the left a little. Just a suggestion, I don’t know if it looks better than this, it is great as it is

Cheers!

#83

thanks guys - yeah I agree about the confused expression  Will adjust it later.

#84

great modeling skills as always, anger and disgust are spot on!

#85

Yeh my guess is that maybe you didn’t spend a lot of time on confused.
Or maybe it wasn’t a very nice day?
I’d say he does does look confused but I’ve seen nicer expressions from you.

Cool.

#86

It’s amazing how quickly you are working. I also remember you saying you were going to do a once-over on all the expressions to get them blocked in, then a detail pass after. As per that mention, no crits at all. All your expressions look awesome.

Hi
Oh wow
amazing
for me its the best thread in this challange !!
looking forward to see more incredible expressions !!

ps. love your modeling/sculpting style

cheers

#88

I didn’t mean it in a bad way. He does look confused somewhat.
Can’t really put to it. Maybe the top lips is running a little close to the teeth.
Not sure.

Maybe it would have been pretty hard to top disgusted anyway

#89

thanks again guys

nielot - wielkie dzieki

ok pushed confused a bit more - since it’s caused so much confusion  + a new expression - expectant/excited [just before Faust signs his soul away ;)]:

#90

ok and one more today - sad:

Hey Mag,

Love the work so far

Criticism wise I think in the confusion look you could maybe open the teeth/jaw a little, perhaps even giving it a little twist off away from the high lip. It’s the sort of opposite-balancing thing that faces do naturally when they lift the top lip I think. I’d also think about a bit more of a squint (outer edges of the eyes and upper edge of the cheeks raised?) to the confusion image as if our Mephistopheles is looking at the object of his confusion

I originally thought expectant/excited might be a little too subtle but I’ve since changed my mind. I think the character would be restrained in his excitement until it turns to Glee, or something similarly intense. Contextually, I think this is the face you’d see as Mephisto looked down on a great cataclysm about to happen … a sort of restrained delight that threatens to suddenly break across his face into a thunderous evil laughter as the volcano explodes or the antichrist is born etc.

If anything I think maybe slightly raising and turning his head (with associated muscle/skin tautness on the sides of the face) would add a little spark to it without giving the game away. Also perhaps a little flaring of the nostrils, literally smelling the taste of victory … oepnning up his senses ready for the big pay off.

I think the thing to be careful of with the expectant/excitement look is to differentiate it from “reflief” … so it isn’t a a sigh or an “ahhhh”. It should have a little more tightness, something restrained in waiting

But yeah, all minor crits. I think what you have is certainly good enough for the time involved. Especially considering there’s 13 other expressions to do!

Looking forward to the rest…

#92

Thanks Wil - Always appreciate good crits. Useful suggestions  there.

Yeah I have to run through the rest and then I’ll certainly try to revisit these shapes:)

#93

It helps to contextualise your interpretation of emotions I think. Like there’s Fear as in the screaming end of Blair Witch Project or Wolf Creek, the violent shuddering when the father looks into the grave and sees a jackal in The Omen, the cowering Fear of the children in Monsters Inc. etc.

It might be easier if you define what sort of context your emotional responses are for. That way we’ll know how to comment on them better

#94

Hi Magdalena, i like the fact that your expressions in general are very subtle, but effective at the same time. I want to make two comments about the last ones…in the case of the expectant i think its very nice but only needs to be more accentuated, now it looks(imo) like a expression betwen neutral and expectant, you almost have it…and about the sad one i think that looks a little worried too, but i don´t know if it just my impression.
The new confused is realy good and funny, no comments about that one, just :buttrock: :applause: .

Cheers.

#95

Hey Magdalena.

I think you’ve sculpted confused and sad quite well, although expectant/excited needs a little more. I believe you’ve captured the expression well in his eyes, but the mouth area seems wrong to me. Perhaps if he was biting his lip instead of his tongue? When feeling expectant, there is stress involved, and when we are stressed, we clench and tighten up. What I mean by this is that I believe the mouth should be mostly closed, as if he were clenching his jaw muscles. Hope this helped.

#96

thanks - I’ve made that expression based on an Al Pacino one exactly - it’s really hard to name it - it’s excited, expectant but not in a stressed way but in a more joyful way. He’s not biting the tongue, he’s just sticking it out in excitement, curling it up a bit… the picture is on the ref sheet btw…

I have to admit I quite like that expression so I’ll probably keep it  - maybe enhance some features more - expecially the eyebrows…
JMART - thanks

#97

Prefer the new confused and the excited is such a treat.
Please tell Meph to stop sobbing now
As a crits I have one comment. The neck.

You have that Transpose thing?
If you got the head to move with the expression then
everything could get a lot more interesting? Just a thought.

#98

yeah I’ll move the head later, after all the expressions are done… at the mo, I don’t want to do that

#99

Looking good mag. Keep going. You keep me motivated

#100

Gotcha. I see it now on the ref.
