Because I may or may not have watched Princess Diaries because she was in it. On a more serious note, I’ve created only one female character so far and even though I was trying for realism it turned out far more cartoony than I wanted. So this is a good opportunity to really focus on just the face and try to make it realistic.

Goals :

  • Only modeling, no textures
  • Base mesh should be detailed enough to resemble her face
  • Using ZBrush to add medium to fine details, skin pores, etc…
  • Sculpting hair as geometry as opposed to hair system

The only thing I’m not sure how I want to approach are the facial shapes. I’m probably going to just sculpt each one individually from the core mesh since I want to practice modeling, but I also want to keep in mind how they could be used to produce a rig’s blend shapes.

Alright, so I managed to get lucky and find two photos of Anne, front and side!! They came from some hairstyle website, and I’ll be using them as a basis for her face, and probably hair too since it’s a good simple style.

And here is a large compilation of all the various expressive images I could find of her. I swear she’s smiling in almost every other picture on the internet, so these took a couple hours to find!!

i think you might find yourself running into problems with your front and side refs…as they are not directly front or side on…they’re both at a slight angle…

#4

Yeah, they’re not perfect unfortunately, but about as close as I can find right now. I’ll probably Photoshop a more straight on face into the hair for the front before I start modeling. The side though, best I could find.

shouldn’t be that much of a problem if you set up your camera angles right for the modeling…

anyway, nice choice of a face!

Good choice, beautiful face.

Nice collection of ref. Shouldn’t be a big issue. You can always eyeball it:arteest:.

not an easy face
good luck  hope you can get it right this is one in a billion face

I managed to find some time today to get some of the rough work done… I decided that for this one, I would first lay down a bunch of splines to use as a guide-line and rough out the proportions first. I’m really glad I decided to do this, because I found that the reference were far too skewed to have ever used when modeling alone. Thankfully I tweaked the spline and, as BrettSinclair said “eyeball it” into place and now I think they resemble her enough that I can start the modeling.

Interesting, time without watching a work with splines, best of luck in it!.

Oh man, spline cages! I used to do those a too. lol

Nice start, but it appears you have her mouth in a slight smile, with the corners streched too far back. I dont know what your overall workflow is, but correcting that now into a relaxed state might save you some headaches later on.

Cheers!

Thanks for pointing that out, the mouth was looking very odd. Yeah, I normally wouldn’t have done the spline thing, but thought I’d try it out and see if it could help improve.

Alright, so my verdict so far… I may have bit off more than I can chew with this one. However, that’s the only way I’ll learn. Right now it just looks like a generic person, but I am at a loss for how to translate features from Anne’s face to this one. So any advice / critiques would be very much appreciated!

Great start you got there! I think the nose end is a bit to big and the eyes are to big too, but i’m sure you’ll fix the proportions there when you’re getting more parts of the face done. Keep it up!
