Hi,
This is my submission to HMC #17 : Star Wars Steampunk. I worked off of Bjorn Hurri’s concept of the StormTrooper; very inspiring work. I used 3ds Max 9, Polyboost, and Vray. Around 90ish hrs to complete. This was a lot of fun and can’t wait to do another.

My first human model, probably the best model I’ve done to date, based off of Sillof’s snow trooper figurine. Not too sure on how long it took, maybe 80-100 hours, give or take 15 or so. All done in Maya 2008/2009 with a bit of photoshop for composting. I had a lot of fun working on it, despite many long nights near the end. Thanks to Aaron “MysticDread” Sturgeon for putting me up to this, Ben Fleuter for giving me workable front and side reference to help get me started, and everyone else who participated, lots of really inspiring work.

Description:
For This piece i tried to get as far away as possible from the original walker, and made it an unpractical machine for warfare. The Walker is mainly floating due to the Zeppelin based body and flexible legs are a support as well as steering mechanisme.
The legs and Head have been rigged and fully animatable. The Rigging was possible due to an extensive use of visibility layers and proxy’s in Maya because 3.34 Million unsmoothed poly’s are a pain to work with.
Compositing was done in Apple’s Shake.

My original concept was to do a straight forward Scout. I had all my references together and explained to Ben Fleuter what I needed. After starting the model, Aaron “MysticDread” Sturgeon pointed out how dog like the helmet was. Thanks to him, I chose to pursue that aspect and made my character a Bothan Scout. I’d say that I’ve spent from 80-100 hours on this. I used Maya 2008/2009. I learned a lot and my modeling is getting a bit faster. Thanks to Aaron and Colin for pushing me to do better And everyone who commented on my thread and my family. Thanks for the support and critiques.
This has been an awesome experience. Seeing other people’s work has taught me so much and really driven me.

First of all thanks to PELENG for the awesome concept art. Thanks also to everyone who stopped by my thread to give me crits and comments. I have to go to work so I have to make this quick…

It was awesome seeing everyone else’s coming along too. I would have commented in your threads more but I can’t figure out how to make cgtalk not subscribe me to threads I post in and then send me email everytime someone else replies hehe.

I made all my basemeshes in Maya then worked on them in zBrush. I used some photoshop in the end to composite different renders together and add the smoke and saber glow for the beauty renders.

Not sure if I will be able to do the next HMC but I think I’ll work on that other steampunk challenge going on now.

All in all a great experience, I hadn’t done clothing like this before, and I definitely felt like I was going faster this time from what I learned on my last HMC. Good stuff everyone!

The initial concept of the speeder belongs to Bjorn Hurri, which I have to thank for sharing all his concepts, because they were really great. I tried to create detail in what I thought steampunk represented; pipes and gears. I tried to keep the main feel of the speeder intact, which I felt Bjorn’s concept emulated. This project for me, was a study on how to model with a hard-surface workflow. I learned a lot from this project and hope to participate again.

This here is General Grievous, I’m pretty sure you know who he is. The original concept was developed by my good friend Shaun Keenan. (amazing character concept artist, look him up).

Software used: Maya, Photoshop
Hours for creation: 150 hours (aprx)

Methods of inspiration: Research, watching the movie, keeping tabs on all of you who are also competing, having no life what-so-ever. (being a student is like that…) but I love it, I love the pressure, the criticism, and having the urge to go on.

Cheers to you all!

Vitaly,

This is the first HMC I have taken part in and I’ve definitely learnt a lot doing it (and lost a lot of sleep). Special thanks to Bjorn for letting me use his awesome concept art, I hope I did it proud! Also thanks for all the feedback on the thread (and thanks to the BA guys for the blender bit), couldn’t have got this far without the crit! As for workflow I started off modeling in blender and then exported to zbrush for the detailing. I actually didn’t manage to finish detailing all the objects in zbrush, you may notice that some of the bits in the big back pack are smooth… The base mesh before going into zbrush was around 90,000 verts and the final model is 27mil in around 36 subtools. Unfortunately I ran out of time to render this in modo. It took around 60-70 hours to complete this over about 3 and a half weeks.

Thanks again to everyone who viewed and posted on my thread!
Andrew

Well, this was my first HMC and although I run out of time and had to finish this in a hurry it was a nice experience. The model is a steampunk podracer with two engines and a carriage where the driver can steer the engines like horses. The skids will lift off the ground as soon as the podracer is fast enough to reduce frictional resistance.
For modelling I used Blender.
And thank you very much for all the advice!

Giant steam-powered, iron-clad, rebel-stomping machine. Just thank God it runs on steam and not gasoline.

I decided to angle more for the older American Civil War Ironclad era. I thought, What if John Ericson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel were tasked with making an AT AT?

I really enjoyed myself on this one. It’s my first CG Society contest, but probably not my last. I’d like to thank the very supportive and helpful crowd here. I pushed myself and my computer to new limits, and that is always a good thing.

I do have to say that I was going to work further on this and ran out of time. I will post some updates in my wip thread when I’ve done more.

Hey! my first HMC, this is Boba Fett based on concept art by Magnus aka Schlook. Gun and jetpack were sketched and built in max from my own designs.

Everything created mostly on week-ends. 3D Max 9, Mudbox 2009 & Polyboost. Mudbox 2009 screwed me over (ok it’s probably my fault!) and i failed to get a decent pose for the beauty render =/. Inspiring work from everyone.

Details: Max 2009, Photoshop. Time Approx 70 hours, Weekends and before and after work.

Great challenge subject, congratulations to all who finished some really inspirational and amazing work.
Pushed my machine to new limits, and found alot of new ways to get more out of it.
Never enough but more.

Wish I could have spent about twice as much time on it though, theres alot not finished
(eg: no Deathstar weapon).

Alot of the model is rigged, and some animated, the rudder, the air vent fans, air vents, propeller, Docking Boom Arms.

My idea for this model was that this was a all in one station that served as a weapons,
a supply ship and a base for Zepplins to dock at and refill.

The Beauty shot, which is bad I know, but its deadline time, is of a
Shipyard, which is only half finished

I love steam punk, so it was a no brainier, and doing Ventress in that style just sounded like a blast. I tried to take some of her lore into the design with a cowboy bounty hunter look. So here it is. she took me around 210 hours, or a little more too long
programs used: Maya 2008

Stay cool!
