All that work in your modeler is really paying off. The details in ZBrush are looking great.
HMC #17 : Star Wars Steampunk - Jawa
right after a bit more zbrushing I’ve smoothed a couple of the subtools and worked on the apron a bit, still got a lot of detailing to do by monday :argh: It took quite a while to get each of the belts to subdivide correctly, eded up hiding and grouping the sides of the belts and creasing them so that the divide gives a sharp edge but smooths the main shape… Also used flatten on the sides of the belt with the clasp but i think that’ll take too long to do on each belt…

Brilliant! This is exactly what I was getting too in my post over at BlenderArtists, and you have captured it! The apron… The robes… just how I was imagining, I guess now you can start tearing stuff up, but I’m sure you are getting to it
Good work mate!
Keep it up.
WyattHarris: Thanks man. It is great to have so many forms to detail in zbrush. I just really hope I manage to finish on time
ZaneV: Shot man, going to use some alpha maps to get the edges looking nice and torn up :buttrock:
Andrew
So didn’t get too long to work tonight, but will have to be putting some major hours in before monday if i hope to finish. Not sure if this is the right way to go about it but I am dividing all the subtools and setting the creases to ensure I get smooth surfaces and hard edges where applicable, then I am going to add the detail, I’ve got a couple objects left to divide then pour on the detail I also downloaded a ton of fabric and metal photos which i will make some alphas from…
PS sorry for all the other huge images, i’ll replace then with thumbnails when i get a chance
here is the finished glove, I’m definitely not coloring for the deadline so it’s just default zbrush mat… also finished apron and some of the strapping, will post tomorrow…
Andrew
(PS sorry for wierd views, the front back thing for char sheet just rendered the other views blank… i think something to do with the centre of the tool not being the centre of the glove etc…)

So the comp is over, here is my final entry, I have posted all the other shots in the hand in thread here. Thanks to everyone who gave me crit and encouragement! I will be taking a break form this character to finish up my mountain giant and then will return to color him and finish a render in modo :).
Andrew
Great work!
Its been really good to see an entry with blender it the work flow. I have enjoyed following your progress and congratulations on finishing.
So… going for the next challenge?
Zane.
Zane: Thanks man And thanks for the crit, it was really helpfull to get indepth responses! Blender is great in my workflow and I could never have managed to model so many parts so quickly without it
hmmm, the next challenge, lol! Would love too, but I think my body will protest as it’s serious lack of sleep is finally getting to it I am also immigrating in 6 weeks so that will probably occupy me. Between finishing my mountain giant, I want to finish this guy, texture him and then add him to my portfolio before I move so I’ll try fit that in somwhere and will post the updates on this thread (I did some renders in modo with alpha maps to make the cloth tattered but wasn’t going to complete the texturing so didn’t use it for the challenge entry).

Hey that’s no problem mate, I always like some critique on my projects and I know how frustrating it can be when the community is slow to comment. I think one of the problems with the blender community is that it is still so new, relative to other 3D package communities out there, and there are alot of new users so many of projects on the forums don’t get finished so people loose interest.
I’m glad that you want to continue with this project and I’ll keep an eye out for this thread.
Immigrating from your country is going to be quite a big step and good luck with it! You wouldn’t by any chance be coming here to good ol’ Australia?
Zane.

Blender Artists WIP Thread
Description:
This is the first HMC I have taken part in and I’ve definitely learnt a lot doing it (and lost a lot of sleep). Special thanks to Bjorn for letting me use his awesome concept art, I hope I did it proud! Also thanks for all the feedback on the thread (and thanks to the BA guys for the blender bit), couldn’t have got this far without the crit! As for workflow I started off modeling in blender and then exported to zbrush for the detailing. I actually didn’t manage to finish detailing all the objects in zbrush, you may notice that some of the bits in the big back pack are smooth… The base mesh before going into zbrush was around 90,000 verts and the final model is 27mil in around 36 subtools. Unfortunately I ran out of time to render this in modo. It took around 60-70 hours to complete this over about 3 and a half weeks.
Thanks again to everyone who viewed and posted on my thread!
Andrew
so this is my first attempt in modo., the colors are awefull, materials are bad, displacement overlaps, etc… and the alpha map isn’t right, it’s leaves a seam on the edge etc… anyway thought i’d post it anyways

Ja it was a bit slow in the begining I suppose its just one of those things, one never knows what the community is going to do.
As for Aus unfortunately not, I would actually dig to come there and it was one of the options I looked into but I only know about 2 poeple in the whole country :D… So I am going to the UK just outside London. Should be a good change and I’m hoping to finally make my way into the industry, but we’ll see what happens…
