HMC #14 - Robocop 2

#81

No you can’t comapre it or the complexity of the 2 robots, one’s a kids film with a cute robots, the other ones a full on angry beast of a robot maiming plenty !

And by todays standards it’s nothing ( except I’m sure Pixar have probably derived some inspiration for Wall.E from it, so it shouldn’t be dismissed just yet ), however it was iconic at in it’s (lunch)time.

#82

How can you NOT like Short Circuit???

#2 was a bit naff but the first one was genuninely funny and the robot itself was pretty good robotics back in its day.

“Check it out - 500 MEGABYTES!”

#83

No no Short circuit rocks ! You need to see it, classic 80’s filming at it’s best, and to my knowledge very little CG in it, if any ! Radio Controlled wonder number 5

Hehe I was warning against robocop3 - not short circut  its so many years ago since i saw short circuit that i cant really say much about it - but maybe I’ll check it out again some time.

I’ve begun in the welding arm now, and its way more complicated that I somehow hoped it would be  Hopefully ill have it done in a couple of days since im a bit occupied atm.

Damn all of you who are doing symmetrical models

Cheers to all and thx again for all the comments and encouragement!

:hmm: Kids stuff, not really my style.
Robocop 2 Stopanimation sequences are more what I crave for.

I must say I’m very impressed by the work done by guys like Gumby or Trenox.
Cain is one of the most complex design I know with tons of articulation points. And it’s assymetrical.
Tippett studio was really upset after R1 released. Why?
Because a lot of unlicensed ED209 figures were made in Japan and they couldn’t do a thing against that.
So they decided to make such complex design for cain that it would be almost impossible to replicate cause it woud be cost prohibitive.
8 stopmotion puppets were made for the movie and cost around $60 000 each.

And we can say they succeed behind expectation.
Back then only Argonaut release an horrible/inaccurate resin kit.
Recently Kotobukiya made a super accurate but ultra small unarticulated PVC figure.
Hot toys claimed to be working on a 1/6 scale cain but they have more juicy licenses to milk first.
And that’s all. There’s still no decent cain model today.

Can we untittle Cain as the most “impossible design, outrageously expensive to mass produce”?

Anyway here is a little movie I took of the Cain puppet exposed at the Berlin film museum.

Enjoy

That was like the ultimate stopmotion-porn video.

Although I rate DragonSlayer as the pinnicle of Stop motion technology, I think the stop motion in Robocop2 is Tippet Studio being pushed to the extreme. I think Hollywood gave up on Stop motion right at the time they were making some of the most significant advances in the craft.

Think about it - Stop motion has the advantage of real lighting, real objects. Plus you dont have the bullshit of different packages - you just got on with the job.

I’m not saying we should all go back to Stop-motion, certainly not, but I think to give up on it completely was absolutely foolish. I mean, with todays Camera technology and the advancements in developing smaller and more detailed components I think alot more can be done. To be honest its quite shocking to think that Robocop 2 was released almost 20 years ago. The detail they put into the Cain models was outstanding - especially when combined with the digital face monitor.

I do wonder what we would get if Phil Tippet was given a new Robocop Sequel and to produce a completely new robot nemesis - using a combination of CGI and Stop/Go-motion. If given more budget, resources and time I bet his team would easily push past what was done in RC2.

Oh well, must stop dreaming and get back to work…

MGM have plan for a remake of the original Robocop.:hmm:
Don’t know much about who’s in the team but I’m curious to see what the FX will look like.:wip:

#89

Crap I’m sad because I cannot see the images on this thread. I tried for a few days now with no luck. I couldn’t even post the reply with firefox because images were not loading so I’m using explorer now to write this. It’s strange because I can see everything elsewhere.

#90

Update please!

#91

Re: Insroo.

If its a remake of Robocop then I dont care about it. If its a good’n’proper sequel though, I would be willing to give them a chance. Robocop is simply a perfect film and I cant really see what needs remaking - the music, acting, vfx, direction are all faultless.

#92

well it’s 21 years old now see. far too old. must remake.

#93

well it’s 21 years old now see. far too old. must remake.

Can you hear that? Sounds like chanting…

“RENEW! RENEW! RENEW!”

#94

and thats stopped them before has it ???

#95

Well, I have to concour that Hollywood is full of idiots.

#96

It will be nice a cleaning up of original robocop movies… like original star wars movies… , robocop looks great today but somes details make its looks very old…

for example all the non flats tvs and monitors… that detail telepoort me to the 80s, just add modern flat panels by fx … and remake the stop motion with new cg graphics thats all that need robocop movie for me …

The cain model of the post looks perfect , please you could do a great animation with that model

#97

Time for an update. Here’s the welding arm:

And a wire shot:

Welding arm attached to the body (the shoulder area still needs some work):

And a full body shot:

Hopefully I can have the other arm done during the weekend. Theres still alot of tweaking to do. Esp. the back and underside of the torso is pretty much missing. + I want to tweak the legs with the new reference i got.

#98

cant really say much …

superb modelling and fully deserving of 5*

#99

Looks UHR as usual - as everyone has come to expect.

I really hope that you get time to make proper materials and lighting for this sucker. If you die before you do, I’d like to have the opportunity. So many sweet shapres and forms on this… yummy!

…and did you just go berserk on that grid thingie? Looks like a wireframe max-out overkill extravaganza. Planning on ever going that close, Mr. I-model-details-instead-of-painting-them?

Keep it up!

I might have mentioned this already, but this is simply awesome! I hope you have enough time to continue at the level of detail that you’re going for.
