HIGH poly Mech

#1

Hey guys. I haven’t modeled anything for a few years, just because I haven’t had the time really, but I’m on a sick leave, and decided to open Max again.

I've always wanted to model a mech, but I have never had any patience. I've always looked for shortcuts in the past and have never made any really detailed/good models. Decided this time to go all the way and throw as much detail as humanly possible into it.

I know some of the detail may be totally useless, since no one will ever see it, but I actually find myself enjoying tinkering with tiny parts. Currently have the better part ot one foot finished, and current polycount is at around 100.000.

Like I said, this is my first model in a few years, and I never was any good to begin with so be gentle ;)

  Thanx

I’m a sucker for those tiny (sometime unnoticable) details too
Also a big fan of mechs and what you got there is looking good!

Any concept/references you’re working off that you wanna show or do you realy just start of with legs and decide later on what’s next?

Thanx Sh00ks! Appreciate the feedback.

I’m working off a sketch I found on google. Not my artwork, but the link to it is here:

Trying to stay true-ish to the concept.

I think you might be selling yourself a bit short there…

Great start. Some nice detailing going on. Not a Warhammer 40K titan by any chance?

Thanx for the feedback sh00ks! Appreciate it. I’m working off an image I found online. A lot less detailed, but I’m just adding what I want. (tried replying with a link to the image, but it may have been filtered.) No idea where I go after the legs are done, but that’s half the fun

Thanks musashidan! Honestly, the most impressive model I made before this was like 60-70.000 polys and that was years ago. Never tried anything of this scale, so I’m really hoping it will turn out good

I have no Idea what it is really, but It’s sort of warhammer inspired I suppose, with all the studs and pegs. hehe!

Quick Update:

#7

It’s all about fun!!

Will be following this one :keenly:

Another update before I sign off for the day. Finally figured how to connect the shin to the thigh and allow the poor guy to do his bipedal thing.

Currently rocking 130.000 polygons and rising rapidly.

Man, this is the most weird washing machine I’ve ever seen!!!

It looks pretty good modelled, congratulations :D! Makes me wonder when the hell will be out the next Fallout :frowning:
So there will be a guy in there? I don’t know where would you fit her/him, right now it seems like there’s no room. Also, where is the plasma-turbo-mega-atomic-sonic-laser-gun?

#10

Heh, thanks buddy!

That’s just the foot and the shin though, by the way, so no room for a guy yet  I haven’t decided wether to make it human-operated or not. May go down the Matrix APU route and make an outboard seating unit or something, we’ll see.

Oh, also, there will be guns… Big ones!

[left]Finally starting to work out how to connect up the legs to the pelvis. These legs have taken way more time than expected.

Cool man! Your recent renders with the AO and dark background really pop.

Do you have an overall idea for the overall proportions, or are you designing as you go?

#14

Thanks man! Yeah, I wanted to get a feel for how it might look in the end, and the AO really helped! Added a few render elements and messed about in photoshop a little bit to force the DOF some and make the shadows pop.

I have an overall idea, but I’m using multiple references by different artists, so it’s a little touch and go. But I’m going for a pretty low, wide stance. roughly 2 times the height of the legs, and not much wider than the second to last image. Might have to change some elements though. Afraid some of the parts on the feet are gonna look to flimsy. but we’ll see!

#15

Wanted to just give you a feel for what the final proportions are. at least the way I see them in my head now. So I blocked out a very basic draft.

Suggestions and comments are most welcome.

WOW! The new Metal Gear is comming out!

The image size are starting to be so damn small for your super detailed washing machine, maybe a link for larger views would be interesting.
Are you going to make both arms equal? Sometimes futuristic machinery have the quality of being asymetrical. That means a little bit of more work, but maybe it would be interesting.
Also the “geometry” behind the nose-like box is VERY BIG. I’m wondering what kind of post-nuclear weapon is this robot hiding us…

#17

Hey, thanks man!

You can see the latest progress in a little higher res on my Deviantart page

I will be modeling a lot of asymetrical detail. Most likely the arms will have two different weapons. also, I’ll make sure to add asymetrical detailing on the torso and the legs.

Yeah, the torso is pretty big, but that’s cause I assume it needs an engine of sorts, and somewhere to house major weapons systems. We’ll see how it ends up though, a lot may change

This is going really well.
Could you post some wireframes as well?

Keep it up!

Been a while since I posted an update.

Going for the post apocalyptic, re-purposed look.
