WIP THREAD - http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=208&t=1215255

Hey everyone! I have to submit this early because I will be out of town for the weekend starting tonight. I chose Space Ghost and modeled him in a realistic way as I would think to see him in a movie or if his look was updated. All the modeling, texturing, and mapping was done in ZBrush and then ported over to Maya for rendering. Thanks!

In the end I’m happy to have finished what I did. There are still some things I wanted to finish but for now I’m going to move on. Everything was done in Zbrush, 3dsMax, and Vray. I learned a lot in the short time allowed and I’m glad to have been apart of this competition.

Jayce and the Wheeled warriors was one of my most favorite shows growing up. Looking back at the episodes now, I see how they tossed a lot of logic out the window. Still, I wanted to re-imagine some of the vehicles and characters in a way that was more updated, and would make more sense; with more aggressive, sleeker styling, but still recognizable enough for old-schoolers to relate to the final designs.

I didn’t get to work on Oon. Partially because I feel I did quite a bit in the time-frame, and partially because I did not know how his Lance would fit inside of Armed force (cartoon physics dagnabbit)…Plus…He would have been totally lost in the diorama and final render. Jayce is barely visible as it is behind the broken canopy. (see W.I.P thread for Jayce details) I think I went overboard with the suspension on Armed-Force…trying to make a re-design. In retrospect, I think I should have stayed with the original Baja-Truck style suspension.

All in all, this is my first time entering a hardcore modeling challenge, and I have to say, I had loads of fun. I feel like the challenge forced me to push myself further. It was great getting feedback and interacting with members of the community, rather than lurking in the shadows like I always do. It was great watching all the progressions from everyone as well.

Peace out, and good luck to one and all. We did awesome!

Hi Res

Hi Res

WIP Thread

I originally started this with the intention of only doing the van, but I just couldn’t pass up an excuse to make the turtles.

Challenge was a lot of fun, learned a couple new tricks in Zbrush along the way. All the other entries and threads have been fun to watch, good luck to everyone!

[/color]I was very excited to attempt Cheetara again. The last time was over 5 years ago and broken right from the start, unfortunately I didn’t know that. I wasn’t able to finish everything I wanted. The beauty render with Cats Lair is missing quite a few elements but I ran out of time. I was able to bang out Cats Lair in less than a day and for me that’s a miracle. Still, I’m happy with how it turned out and I learned a lot along the way. Excellent work from everyone and congratulations to everyone that finished. Good luck!

Hmph, no one seems to care to vote on this one, strange.

I’ll toss in a vote for C. Singer.

Spectacular work man, I really enjoyed watching your progress.

And thanks Wyatt!

#12

Nicholas McElmury I have to vote for this guy right here. Excellent work on the turtles.

#13

Super neck and neck between C. Singer and Nicholas McElmury. I think I have to vote for Nicholas McElmury though for Best Model because I can really feel the action and I think the addition of the turtles really helped give it life. However if I am doing this right, (first time voting) I am actually splitting my vote for each category between the two, like I said, super neck and neck. See below:

BEST WIP: C. Singer
Best Vehicle: C. Singer
BEST DIORAMA: Nicholas McElmury
BEST RENDER: Nicholas McElmury
and
BEST MODEL: Nicholas McElmury

C. Singer, it was really hard though, yours was incredible too! The particle details of the kicked up gravel/dirt are a great touch, and your attention to detail is what pulled your Best Vehicle vote. Your WIP thread proved your very thorough thought process and it looked like you were having a ton of fun! Awesome skill.

Really cool to see Rocko’s Modern Life and Gargoyles. (two of my fave shows growing up) Very well done too. You guys all did awesome!

I really think, Remesher of Zbrush help some topology, but for me a good topology should be manually done. I expect proper simple topology unsubdivide in that challenge. I hope in the future, people won’t go to the easy Remesher buttom.

BEST WIP: C. Singer
Best Vehicle: Nicholas McElmury
BEST DIORAMA: Nicholas McElmury

I loved all the entry’s here. C Singer some really great work and I loved to see his progress and reference/ inspiration but I think overall Nicholas McElmury nailed the final. Very clean topology and the action of the turtles made it just a bit better in the end.
