Help with Wings 3D crashes

#1

Hello,

if someone had any idea on that I would be grateful.

I am a newbie to Wings3D, so I have not used it to a large extent. Although working with other software packages I quite like its workflow (although a universal manipulator might be a nice addition ;-)

Wings has recently crashed a couple of times when performing duplicate, flip and and uv mesh unfolding operations, 2 times leaving me with a windows message about a hardware error.

Another crash just produced a black screen but I was able to return to Windows. WINGS 3D did not start until I rebooted the system. However, other progs (C4D, XSI 5 etc.) have rarely or never crashed on my system.

I am currently using Version 0.98.29b. My graphic card is an ATI RADEON 9600 TX, I am running Windows XP Home with SP 1.

Thanks in advance

Standard answers:

 1. Keep Wings up-to-date or you’ll be missing new features &/or bug fixes. Current stable release is 0.98.32a, latest dev release is 0.98.34. I’ve been using .34 since it’s release without any troubles and I too have an ATI card.

 2. Make sure you have the latest video drivers. ATI’s are infamous for their OpenGL wonkiness (which Wings uses to draw/render the viewports, menus, everything). What you describe sounds like a video driver glitch.

 3. If, after complying w/ 1 & 2 above, you still get crashes, look in the Wings directory for a wings crash dump file ( a text file) and post it on the Wings Official Development forum with a description of what you were doing when you got the crash.

Hope this helps.

Hello RAN 13,

thanks a lot for the advice. I’ll install Wings3D 0.98.34 and if this does not help an update of video drivers might do the trick.

Kind regards
