help with glowing lakes!

Hey everyone! Alright so the deal here is that there’s this ice lake in the middle of the arctic that’s supposed to be a portal to the bermuda tropics. What I imagine in my head is so interesting but whenever I try to paint it or make sense of it I get all tangled up in how the edges of the crater/ice are supposed to be lit and how much glow is there supposed to be and how far should the light spread etc etc. Please help! Comments and paint overs are super welcome.

I love the concept. And I can immediately see the story, before I read your post. That aspect is great.

The composition is a bit uninteresting and doesn’t do your concept justice. The islands (both the ice and the tropical one) are dead center, and too symetrical. The background is symmetrical also. I love what is starting to happen with the through the portal though. I’d say more of that. Something to keep my eye engaged in the story.

If the water is lit from below, we should be seeing the light seep through the ice, because ice is not fully opaque. The entire ice landscape would probably look like it’s self-illuminated from below.
