Help Modeling a River City? (Maya)

#1

I’m fairly new to modeling, so this may seem like an easy question. But I really have no idea how to do this.

What would be the right way to go about modeling a basic winding river for a city environment?

If anyone would be willing to draw topology over this, or just write it out I would greatly appreciate it.

There are a million and one “best ways” to go about this. You can model it in manually (vert pushing), you can add subdivisions to the heavens, use the sculpt geometry tool with maybe soft select turned on, you can extrude then smooth. Point being there’s really no “right” or “best” way. What I would recommend, especially with environments is using a displacement map. Pretty simple actually, whats white stays whats black goes back to wherever it came from. It’ll probably be your best bet for adding terrain and your river you seek to accomplish. It’ll sure save you the head ache of doing it manually.
