Head Start

#1

Hello All,

This is my first post to the WIP forum and my latest attempt at creating a CG human. So far, I’ve just gotten to the point where I wanted to try out some basic skin shading and thought it would help to get some feedback.

It’s just a basic subsurface material with a diluted crumple procedural for the bump and a modified crumple procedural to break up the slightly blueish spec hilights and the same shader used to choke the edge feathering to simulate some peach fuzz.

I’m still working on the model, so I didn’t pull any UV maps just yet. I’m sketching out a few pose ideas, trying to keep it simple. Right now there’s some chattering from the scatter which might be taken out by the bitmaps I’ll be working on.

I’m using a trial version of Electric Image 6.5. Anybody have an idea how to make convincing hair in EI without buying a plugin? I’ve been playing with the Maya PLE and LOVE IT, but can’t really see what I’m doing through the watermarks. This will be my next major purchase but for now I’m using EI.

So, Any thoughts??

Really. . .Don’t be shy.

Go ahead, I know you want to say something.

I’m new to working with subsurface scattering so any advice would help.

Thanks.

harryb,

Just saw your post and did a little paintover, hope you don’t mind. Your model looks great, I just think the eyes need a bit of tweaking.

[left]She looks a bit like Julia Roberts with the wide lips and slender nose ~ was that your intention?

Hope this is a bit helpful.

Cheers,

haiu – Thanks! The nose IS off. The top in the nasion area where the glabella meets the brow. It looks like she got whacked with a soccer ball. I think this is because I got carried away with smoothing and didn’t rake my falloff up enough for a smooth blend. A little rhinoplasy and she’ll be as good as gold. Thanks, good catch!

Rebeccak – Thanks! It’s amazing what a subtle change can make. It looks much better.

You know, I didn’t really plan on making her look like anybody in particular but now that you mention it she DOES look a little like Julia Roberts. It’s funny. The same thing happened with my Spectacular Challenge entry. I watched THX 1138 a little while ago and the only two faces (besides the statue) looked like Tex and Luh.

Then again, maybe it’s because they’re bald.

Hmm.

Thanks for taking the time for the paint-over. It helps a lot!
