HCR MINI-Challenge #9: Star Wars Tribute

© Copyright Lucasfilm 2007

Choose a classic scene from the Star Wars Filmed Saga and reinterpret it into a 3d diorama, or better yet think up your own scene using the Star Wars characters from the films.

30 years Star Wars exploded into world cinemas,
and it forever changed the film industry.

On May 25th 1977 Star Wars had it north American release, and
it would grow to be one of the most successful film franchises ever.

THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

Sculpt one or more representations of the Star Wars characters/ creatures in 1 month and two weeks (See the provided list). The idea of this “mini-challenge” is to simulate an impossible deadline for a project. The artists will have at their discretion how detailed the models they will be working on, and the amount of models, and if the models will be shaded/ rigged. But the model will have to be original film interpretation.

A big part of the challenge is that the modeler will have to scavenge all the reference for the film models. But at the end of the challenge the creature/machine have to look like the one shown on film.

They are larger than life movie characters that have taken a life of their own.

There are two ways to participate:
[li]Single character Diorama: You may sculpt the creature inside the appropriate environment.[/li][b]Some diorama examples:
[li]Storm Trooper on patrol[/li][li]Luke holding a Lightsaber[/li][li]The emeperor at the Senate[/li][li]Darth Maul strikes! [/li][/ul]
[li]Multiple character Diorama: You may sculpt the creature inside the appropriate environment [/li]

Some diorama examples:
[li]The Clone army[/li][li]The Ewoks vs the Stor Troopers[/li][li]Luke vs Vader[/li][li]Jar Jar vs his Thonge[/li][li]Jango vs Obi wan[/li]

THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

The idea of these HARDCORE MINI CHALLENGES is to push the modeling skills participants while learning from the past. To get past preconceptions of the limits of digital art. To push digital artists into the world of sculptors & artisans. But we will have variety on these mini challenges. Sometimes we will sculpt a model based on a masterpiece, but on other times we might do Jet fighter or a landmark…

The only thing that will be consistent is the SHORT DEADLINES.

At the end of the challenge, the participant should have a finished collection of entries. Keep in mind contest of high difficulty you will have ONE MONTH and TWO WEEKS to do the challenge, but the rewards, even if you don’t win, will be your improved skills in speed and accuracy.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:______________________

Detailed RESEARCH, and attention to detail are key for ALL entries. Please before doing an entry do your homework.

The best model will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:
[li]Most Accurate Likeness[/li][li]Most epic model[/li][li]Most expressive model[/li][/ul]and the big one of course:
[li]Best Overall Entry[/li][/ul]I will also spotlight the users who have done the Highest Number of FINISHED models

Sticky: Challenge #9 FAQ

And the plug will be done on Saturday…

PS I am still editing the rules

can we do LEGO star wars ?

btw, i believe it should be “DEADLINE” not dateline

Hey Roberto. I thought I’d point out the part taken from the Ray Harryhausen challenge. Gotta fix this. :D

Btw, awesome challenge! I never get enough time to participate in these. Maybe I’ll just have to cut back on sleep this time.

I’ve never had enough time for these Roberto but I’m in this time.

hey roberto I hope that also “inorganic” can count… Me ans Louis wanted to model the AT scene  and make a diorama of the attack (and I guess that lot of people want to model tie fighters, death star, etc. etc.) and after all isnt all robot inorganic  ?

I might be able to squeek in some time on this one after all! I’d hate to pass this one up! I would expect a great turnout on this one too given the subject matter.

Why not!

Have fun!

Why not!

Have fun! But keep in mid that they have to be built in an dramatic diroama setting. Imagine for example an AT-ST being attacked by pissed off Ewoks. Or a Snowspeeder about to be crushed by an AT-AT. The idea of the mini challenge is to capture the drama of the Star Wars saga.

I understand why you made this into a regular challenge, I mean two weeks is a little steep…

but I thought this was gonna be a mini challenge (meaning 2 weeks)… if that is not the case then I may be able to work in one of my own…

PS we are allowing textures right?

I would love to give this challenge a go, but I got my final show coming up so I’m full of busy doing other stuff (check my WIP’s).

I love star wars and have already done some pieces either check my portfolio or this thread. Hope you like them

Storm Trooper Laundry Error

Where are the pictures I love to join

WHAT?! NO BOBA FETT?! I think I’m going to cry.

edit: sorry, didn’t see those were just examples.

Hi Roberto,

Can we use a character that was only mentioned in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith?
I would love to make Darth Plagueis (the Wise) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darth_Plagueis

man!! I’m in this one!

Ah man, If I don’t enter this one then I’m never gonna…

Hey Roberto i would like to suggest something for the next hardcore modellings to come, i think that alot of the entries comes after the post in the front page, and since its only happens like 5 to 6 days after the post is made on the hardcore modelling forum, i think its abit unfair with those that didnt know about the comp in the first place.
I think you could change the rules for the next ones so the comp only starts after the announcement is made on the front page, for the extra 4 to 5 days in a comp that runs for 40 days is like a 10% extra time :P.

Black list ! :stuck_out_tongue:

I posted the thread while I am on vacation with my folks, so I did not have the templates to post the plug. Anyway Ill keep this in mind next time…

Jabba the Hutt and his slave girl Princess Leia Organa (?) Evil Grin
I’d love to but I’m not sure I see myself getting it finished…
A month and 2 weeks?

Would love to someday any case *think* *puzzle* :curious:
  • EDIT *

“Stay away from my footage, you freak!”

Now someone tell me Carrey Fisher doesn’t still look like a sex symbol, 80’s or not
Maybe if I find reference I can start on the Princess and if I find time I’ll get to Jabba and then if
I find reference and time get on to some movie set of sorts…

yeah it’s not much time to do a diarama and make it look good… not unless one pairs up with someone that is… I’d love to see an option to do just a character withhout the whole scene/environment thingy like it the previous challenges… then again an environment might just be the floor
