Hi everybody,

Great challenge, i haven’t posted often on CGTalk from a lack of time, i’m really amazed/inspired by the proffesional work done by various artists on the forum, since there’s still allot to be learned from now on i’ll be participating more often, being a huge fan of Ray Harryhausen myself i decided to enter this challenge, wich is my first CGTalk challenge ever, probably going for the Harryhaussen creature bust, the diorama and multiple creatures seem like a daunting task, other then that, good luck to all of you…! i’m off too get some sleep.

Take care

A tear trickles down my left cheek as I watch the progress.

Wow, I just found out about this today. I think I have to get in on this! Ray has been a major influence on me and my work. Unfortunately this is one of the busiest months that I have had in a long time but I guess I could go without sleep for Ray. I can at least do a bust and it will have to be the Cyclops, one of my all time favorite Harryhausen creations. I’m not sure that I understand all of the rules and where to post the work,it took me forever just to find this thread ,but I’m sure I can eventually figure it out. count me in

Hello Mr Baker,
in order to participate in
you just need to post a thread in the main
Hardcore Modeling Challenge forum.

Just call your thread:
HARDCORE MODELING!: Ray Harryhausen Tribute: Cyclops and post your WIP in it.

When you are done, just post your final entry in this core thread.

I am looking forward to your entry.

Fantastic! Rick Baker does a homage to Ray HarryHausen. That’s insane. I am a huge fan of both these guys work. So I shall watch this space with great interest. Wish I was good enough to do some stuff but I guess I’ll just have to watch

Do you get anything for this? Seems like a lot of work…just because.

#31

Thats how it works, a whole lot of work just because.

Honor is the prize I suppose, both to yourself and CGSociety.

#32

Do it for the love of it. I would do it myself since I’m a fan of his work, but how much time do we have left to participate? When is the deadline?

Hi everybody,

Hope i made the deadline for the Harryhausen modeling challenge, not sure if it was either 15-02-2007 or 28-02-2007, haven’t had much time to work on my entry, i’d love to do some texturing work but unfortunatly i won’t make it in time, tried to stay as close as possible to the Harryhausen version but it turned out a bit different, basically changed the shape of the mouth, added some teeth and the horn on top of his head, if i understand correctly the final renders should be rendered at 1600 X 1200 OR 1200 x 1600 in JPG format, and the smaller 800x 600 OR 600 x 800 image should be posted on the threads, so after 1001 crashes, virus attacks, a couple of all-nighters, 10 bags of nacho chips and some diet coke, i finally present CGTalk my “piece de resistance”, et voila…!

This is the Sinbad/Kali fight scene from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Kali was the creature I remembered most from watching those movies as a kid, so that’s why I choose her.
There were two Kali models used in the movies, there was a full sized one which was actually on the set with the actors, and a miniature that was used for the animation.
The full sized one had a lot more detail so I was making a version of that, rather than the miniature.

It’s all Lightwave, with some mudbox sculpting for Sinbad’s clothing. It took a couple of weekends and some weekday evenings.

I’m going to have to call this done as I have other commitments that I have been ignoring to do this challenge. I just had to do something for this challenge as Ray Harryhausen has been such an influence on my life, as he has been to so many other especially of my generation. The Cyclops from the Seventh Voyage left an indelible mark on me as a child one that has stayed with me to this day so, I chose to recreate it. I worked on this for about two and a half weeks. Working between 6 to 10 hours a day. It would probably have taken less time if I new what I was doing. This is the first time that I have ever modeled a full figure from scratch. I learned a lot and had a blast doing it. I used Modo for the base mesh, created the displacement, bump and color maps in ZBrush rendered in Modo ,and used PhotoShop to composite the renders. I hope you like it.
Here is the full sized render http://www.monsterbaker.com/monsterstuff/Cyclopsfinal.jpg
here is a turntable render http://www.monsterbaker.com/monsterstuff/cyclopsturn.mov.zip
here are the ortho views http://www.monsterbaker.com/monsterstuff/orthoviewsfolder/
Here is a closer different version more like what I was originally thinking of doing thought you might want to see
