This is the Sinbad/Kali fight scene from The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Kali was the creature I remembered most from watching those movies as a kid, so that’s why I choose her.
There were two Kali models used in the movies, there was a full sized one which was actually on the set with the actors, and a miniature that was used for the animation.
The full sized one had a lot more detail so I was making a version of that, rather than the miniature.

It’s all Lightwave, with some mudbox sculpting for Sinbad’s clothing. It took a couple of weekends and some weekday evenings.
I’m going to have to call this done as I have other commitments that I have been ignoring to do this challenge. I just had to do something for this challenge as Ray Harryhausen has been such an influence on my life, as he has been to so many other especially of my generation. The Cyclops from the Seventh Voyage left an indelible mark on me as a child one that has stayed with me to this day so, I chose to recreate it. I worked on this for about two and a half weeks. Working between 6 to 10 hours a day. It would probably have taken less time if I new what I was doing. This is the first time that I have ever modeled a full figure from scratch. I learned a lot and had a blast doing it. I used Modo for the base mesh, created the displacement, bump and color maps in ZBrush rendered in Modo ,and used PhotoShop to composite the renders. I hope you like it.

This is my first Hardcore modelling challenge. I decided to enter because of the topic.
I love the Ray harryhausen movies, specially “Jason and the argonauts”. There are three things that shocked me when I was a kid and watched the movies: Medussa, the scene with the skelletons and the giant of stone. So I made Talos. I even thought that it was a real scale statue the first time that I watched the movie, hehehehe…
I’ve used 3D Max, ZBrush and Photoshop. It took me around 15 hours (I thought that the point of these challenges was the speed so I did my best to finish it quickly), plus a few hours for the renders… yes, a few hours for these renders… I have a very slow laptop.

Thanks for comments and viewing my renders and sorry if I didn’t change what you thought it was wrong, I didn’t pretend to make a 1:1 copy of the original.
I had a lot of fun making this model, good challenge!
Good luck everyone!

Oh man, this does not compare anything to your guys’, but I didn’t want to leave it out either. oDDity, you are so right about the skeletons, after being at the museum and watching a film…this is a valuable point for me for future projects.

Well here’s my finished model. It was great to pay tribute to Ray Harryhausen and I learned quite a bit in the process so it was well worth it for me. It took about 80-100 hours to model, texture, rig and render…I didn’t keep track so that’s just an estimate. All the modeling was done in 3dsmax and Zbrush and the textures I created in Photoshop. I wanted to choose something I wasn’t familiar with so chose the Grand Lunar…plus I got lucky and had pretty good references in a book I had. The Grand Lunar was behind a force field in the movie, so where I had questions I used the other Selenites as reference and tried to keep it as close to Ray’s model as I could. There’s been a lot of great work in this challenge, so good luck everyone.

Dave King completed entry / Single Creature / Medusa / Clash of The Titans
This character was done in around five or so days, spread out from Jan 18th through to tonight. The aim was to recreate Rays original maquette from Clash of the Titans- complete with dodgy latex skin (note the fresnel reflections to make it look like rubber
and dinted clay underbody). The model was done in 3dsmax 9 32 bit and detailed in Zbrush. Photoshop was called in for texturing and compositing. I set up a little weblink at visit http://www.daveking.com.au/gallery/medusa/medusa.htm where you can link to all the hi-res images and turntable.

Its been a blast. And now I have the fully poseable Medusa toy I always wanted as a kid. yay!
OK I am way out of my league here but I will at least show off one of my entries. This is the Ceratosaurus from 1,000,000 BC all poly modeling in Wings 3D. I’m not equipped to compete no displacment painting and other stuff but had some fun doing it all old school. Trying ot capture the Harryhausen look and nto an accruate dinosaur he had the limitations of his medium. (also my modeler does not render worth a darn so I am showing some quick no texture renders for the Front side etc. and a beauty shot.
Front side views etc.

My attempt at the Cyclops from “7th Voyage of Sinbad”.
Total production time: approximately 1 week in total

WIP thread here.

The Diorama I did was from “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad”. I decided to model the cavern in which Sinbad Fights Kali. I have been working on this for a couple of weeks. I modeled the cave and Kali. The reference I used came from the Harryhausen website and some video clips of the fight scene which helped to determin what the cave looked like. The model was done in Maya 7, and Photoshop for some of the textures.

First of all let my write that julia did a great and wonderful job and that almost 90% of what you see is due to her
. She’s a talented, focused, fast modeller. We partecipate to this challegne and we learned a lot (finally we succeed in a good zbrush displacement). I learned about human modelling and I hope to have helped her in a bit of rendering technique and materials. I also want to congratulate with the other partecipants the did a great tribute to the master
here’s our calibos an medusa
Here is my rendition of Ray’s Medusa in her temple. I used Maya for all of the modeling, lighting and rendering processes, while all of the texturing was done in Photoshop. I spent approximately 20 hours on the project (though I do not have a definite time, as I didn’t keep track). Unfortunately, I didn’t see the requirement for orthographic shots, so the model was only fine tuned from one camera angle… the ortho shots are not the prettiest.
This is the first hardcore modeling challenge I’ve entered, and I look forward to doing more.
Here is a link to the WIP thread.

Here is my first hardcore modeling submission ever. The minute I saw the title of this thread I had to do something. Despite having work, I was able to put in about 40 hours spread out across 2 weeks. I know he’s not as done as I want him to be, that’s why I plan to revisit this model in the future. I did the modeling, texturing, and lighting in LightWave, and created texture maps in Photoshop. Without further adieu, here’s Bubo:

Alright, i will call it done, now i will start to animate him, hopefully will hv something by sunday on my whip thread.
This is my second time participating on the hardcore modelling, and again i had alot of fun doing it, i hope if time allows me, to participate often. This project made me learn a buch of new things, and if i had more time the model could hv being better.
I started this contest with an idea, and by alot of restrictions i had to adapt the original idea in order to participate on the contest… there was a time that i almost drop off, if not by the supporting words of you guys i would hv droped, im glad i didnt.
The modeling part was fun, specially cuz i wanted to make it all max, the rigg was a nightmare and i learned aloooot with it, the texture was a really rush as i started it yesterday night and had to finish it soon ( thats the reason of the poor background aswell ).
I cant predict how many hours i spent on this, cuz i almost droped it off and started a new model ( the hig poly one ) as u can see on my wip thread, also a big part of the contest was researching how i could do his rigg, but if i would guess, i would say 60 hours.
This contest has alot of talented ppl, and i hope to see all of them again on the next ones.
enouth talk.

Hi all, quick note to thank those that added their comments and words of advice in my WIP thread, much appreciated. I used 3DSMAX8, zbrush, and photoshop CS2. This took really, really long to complete, almost the full alloted timespan. It took me so long as I was in the process of learning more than actually working on the model, and lots n lots of trial and error. I am happy with the final result for this project, hope you like. As I mentioned in my WIP thread, it was my first zBrush work, as well as my first really terrible attempt at a rig, as well as my own painted textures. Hi
I am really sorry I am posting the full size images, If you can point me in the right direction on how I can upload thumbnails with links (like some of the others) I would like to know, thanks.

Model took most of the month to sculpt and RIG. Aside from work it’s pretty much all I did for the month in my free time. I’d say there’s at least 80 hours in the effort.
I won’t be able to complete the animation I planned for the challenge. Ran out of time. I plan to continue with that after the deadline. I’ll post a link for that too when it’s ready.
Thanks, everybody, for your encouragement, support and for an amazing opportunity!
