HCR MINI-Challenge #43: Magic Door ~ The Tea Room

Hi guys! Jumping in here with a late start…

I have wanted to get in on this challenge since they day it was announced, but I couldn’t come up with any concepts I was really happy with. A few days ago I stumbled upon this piece of art for a board game called tokaido, and I thought a 3D interpretation of it would be a cool submission for this challenge.

I’m going to follow this piece pretty closely, excluding the character. I’m also planning to light my scene much differently than the original art.

Anways here’s a few WIPs to start off… most of the modeling is done, still got a few plants and the tree to finish up.

Here’s a maya viewport screenshot of the sub-d base for the archway.

quick zbrush screens:

Less than two weeks to finish this, and I’ve still got plenty to do… :argh:

So the next step is the tree and various plants. After sculpting the main trunk/branches, I’m planning to model a few cherry blossom variants and a few small branch variants and go crazy with instancing to fill out the tree. If there’s a better way of going about that I’d love to hear it, but for now I think that’s the easiest way with the most control

As always, comments or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.
