HCR MINI-Challenge #43: Magic Door<< DOORS OF DURIN >>

#1

Hey!

This is my first participation in a Challenge. I’m sure i will learn a lot with it.

Firstly, I want to thank all the community and staff of CGSociety that is being so important in my process of learning. Also Thanks to Roberto Ortiz for these challenges.

With the release of “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” I am looking back on the original trilogy of The Lord Of The Rings. I’m an enthusiast of the original trilogy and for me, one of the most exciting parts of the film is the Mines of Moria.

I would like to recreate the “West-gate” of Moria also called Doors of Durin.

Here there are some references and the film sequence

Hi guys!

I would like to show you some progress with my project. At this special time of year it’s difficult to find time to make much progress, but…

The Watcher in the Water is the creature who lives in the lake near Doors of Durin. It attacks the Fellowship of the ring when they go into Moria.

It has been sculpted in Zbrush and painted in Substance Painter. It’s the first time i use Substance Painter an it’s awesome. I’m going to include this software in my workflow.

The water is a simple plane with a displacement map.

I’m using Zbrush, Photoshop, Substance Painter, Maya and V-Ray.

If you have some question about my work you are free to ask me!

Hi guys!

I think I’m done with this project! I have learnt a lot with this challenge.

First, I did a basic layout and then I worked on the different elements of the scene.

For the composition, I’ve tried to make all the elements in the scene look towards the door. Every line (the tentacles, the branches…) guides the eye to look at the door.

I’ve used Maya, Zbrush, Photoshop and It’s the first time I’ve used Substance Painter and I think i 'm going to include this software to my workflow!

What I enjoyed the most was sculpting the trees and doing the photoshop composition.

If you have any questions about the process, please ask!

The Idea a lot of me where i see your concept is more Leaf green and this bring feeling on your work.

Maya is conzepiert for this, you can brushwork ore handmade someone how know - but first i say,
your work is up to this point unique.

Ha, great choice here!

Actually, my first idea to this challenge was the black gate from the Two Towers, good to know someone honored the trilogy here!

Your tree model is veery cool, look at it just makes me wanna open mudbox right now and starting doing nature stuff, the stylized look in the brushwork really adds another level of epicness to the Dwarves scene

Good luck in the comp, Cheers!
