HCR MINI-Challenge #41: Heroes of Saturday Morning - Pokémon Charmander

That’s how everything has started :-).
Although, exactly it has been started with that:

And I chose/choose him:

When I was young, I wished that Pokémon would be real. Some day I saw that artwork by RJ Palmer on deviantart and I was fascinated by the true-to-life design of his Pokémons.

So I come up with the idea to fullfill my childhood dream now and create my own realistic charmander in 3D.

Type: Fire
Species: Lizard Pokémon
Height: 0.6m

Obviously prefers hot places. When it rains, steam is said to spout from the tip of its tail.
The flame on its tail indicates Charmander’s life force. If it is healthy, the flame burns brightly. (Pokédex 1st & 2nd Gen.)

I did some paintings and drawings first to see if my idea works. Unfortunately I had to find out that I have to work on my poorly drawing skills :arteest: . I’m not very satisfied how they look and I think my 3D work will vary from them at the end.

Anyway, here is the first painting which is just a mood painting.

I won’t get an environment in time I guess, so the next one is just Charmander in an unlucky pose. I like to have still a cartoonic look by having large eyes, a big head and short arms compared to the rest of the body but realistic texturing and shading and I tried to let him walk on two feeds which is a little bit tricky if you wanna have lizard anatomy.

The final one are experiments to draw model sheets from the side. I realized that it’s impossible to let him walk on two feeds like he does in the anime serie because his tail sets the center of gravity in the back. That’s why I decided to have him walking in a T-Rex pose.

The next step is Sculpting in ZBrush. My progress till now:

Cute, my son approves.
