“Frank Frazetta (February 9, 1928 – May 10, 2010[1][2]) was an American fantasy and science fiction artist, noted for work in comic books, paperback book covers, paintings, posters, LP record album covers and other media.”
" Frazetta has influenced many artists within the genres of fantasy and science fiction. Yusuke Nakano, a lead artist for Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda series, cites Frazetta as an influence. Fantasy artist and musician Joseph Vargo cites Frazetta as a primary influence, and his art calendars since 1998 mark Frazetta’s birthday…

THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

So lets recap…
Sculpt an original 3d scene scenes based on the body of work of Frank Frazetta.
ALL MODELS should be done FROM SCRATCH. No premade (as in before this challenge) base models are allowed.
The idea of this “mini-challenge” is to simulate an impossible deadline for a project. The artists will have at their discretion how detailed the models they will be working on, and the amount of models, and if the models will be shaded and or rigged.
The key is to sculpt good dynamic representations the work of Frazetta.
A big part of the challenge is that the modeler will have to scavenge all the reference he needs .
Another thing:

MODELING should be THE KEY POINT for judging final entries, not the shading.
But displacement maps are allowed in all models.

Note :You may shade and texture your model if you wish, but great modeling is what we are looking for…

CAN YOU DO IT?

What is the HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE?

The idea of these HARDCORE MINI CHALLENGES is to push the modeling skills participants while learning from the past. T o get past preconceptions of the limits of digital art. To push digital artists into the world of sculptors & artisans. But we will have variety on these mini challenges. Sometimes we will sculpt a model based on a masterpiece, but on other times we might do Jet fighter or a landmark…
The only thing that will be consistent is the SHORT DEADLINES.
At the end of the challenge, the participant should have a finished collection of entries. Keep in mind contest of high difficulty you will have ONE MONTH and TWO WEEKS to do the challenge, but the rewards, even if you don’t win, will be your improved skills in speed and accuracy.

OOoh I really hope I can find the time to do this! Good luck everyone!

#3

Awwww snap! Now to somehow devise a way to either inject an additional 20 hours a week into my schedule or learn to function without sleep… very excited for this one!

#4

Yeah I may have to finally get in on one of these to pay homage to such a prolific artist.

#5

"And I dare anyone to do this one:

[ul]
[li]· Conan: link[/li]
"
[/ul] Tempting but I’m currently on my last wacom pen tip, so you know, as far as excuses go…

Going to choose my artwork now, have fun everyone.

#6

Well I guess I’ll take Roberto’s challenge. This is going to be a hell of a long work time. Good thing I have nothing else to do right now. I’ll give it the best that I have. Here comes the Destroyer!

#7

Jeez, we’re live already?! I thought we had a few more days! It’s sooo hard to choose for this one.:stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways, gotta get to it then.

Cheers!

I am already working on a boris/frazetta theme based compo. I have over 1000 pics of both combined and over 500 of franzetta so if anyone needs something ask and I can furnish it. I have only been modeling for 2 weeks now i just wished I was good enough to do from scratch for the challenge, but maybe I can help others with reference as I have several artwork books from frank.

Joe

ps pm me if you would like something. just let me know what you looking for and i will send samples to ya.

http://jwz.livejournal.com/1059344.html
 made me smile.

#13

I want to enter this so badly but as I’ve already entered another sculpting/ modelling challenge I’m not sure I’ll have time…

…It’s perfectly safe to go with out sleep for a month right?

#14

Just remember the dancing bunnies are in your head, not on the canvas.

#15

Ok, I finally have to ask. I have always wondered. What does the HCR stand for?

#16

:bounce: This will be my first challenge. I hope I’m able to finish and I hope I understand all of the rules. I wouldn’t want to be disqualified. Good luck to everyone!

#17

usually HCR is short for hadrcore normally. usually used when talking abt veterns of games or in this case I am guessing its a challenge set up for the more experienced artists due to constraints.

#18

Ah what the hell I’m in

#19

I’m sure it stands for Hardcore but all this time and I’ve never asked. Somewhere HCR became HMC I guess.

#20

First off I’d like to apologize to all of those who were following my sea turtle thread. My muse has been away on studies for almost a year now and I’ve been spiking in and out of depression. I hit a big wall shortly before the deadline and I felt so ashamed of myself that I didn’t even show up to vote, so I need to apologize to everyone who submitted their final entries as well. There were so many amazing threads and you all deserved my comments :frowning:

That being said, she’ll be back in less than 2 weeks and I’m experiencing quite a bit of happiness right now. I just hope it’s true happiness and that I’m not being just feeling manic.

On to the meat.

I don’t know a whole lot about Frank Frazetta, but looking at his work I recognize just about all of it, so I guess I know more than I thought I did  . This challenge looks like an artist’s dream and I do believe I will enter. I am, however, going to take a much more laid back approach to this challenge because I don’t think I can invest as much emotion into it as I did with the Oceans challenge. It drains me by the time the deadline comes along.

For now, I’ll just scour the web and do some homework until I decide on what the nature of my entry and its subject will be.

Good luck to everyone who enters!! I’m sure there will be some amazing artwork produced here over the next month. In fact, there’s already so many entries I think it might even rival the 80’s cartoon challenge soon!!

Happy modeling/sculpting :wip: :applause:
