Classical Self Portrait
HCR MINI-Challenge #22: Classic Self Portrait FAQ
I think this wonāt be any problem,
but can the final piece be rendered and composed like a painting?
Maybe iāll do a painting from a 3d render, then put the render inside a painting inside a 3d scene, and make the painting exceed the borders and partially turn into 3d again.
Simply put, i will be in a painting, reaching out (so the hands and arms reach out of the painting) into the second scene.
can someone help me find my reference⦠iāve seen a sculpture of what i believe to be theseus and the centaur, but itās not the one by antonio canova. in the one iām thinking of, theseus has the centaur in a headlock in his right arm and is staving it with the opposite hand.
but then again, just maybe it might not be theseus, and instead of a centaur it was probably a bull or even a lion⦠
i know my memory is lame.
EDIT: i just did a quick sketch of how i sorta remember it.

Hi Roberto, Pretty cool challenge indeed.
Just 2 question (perhaps dumb!):
1)Where is the concept art thread that you said you attached to your post??? Sorry, but I canāt find itā¦:banghead:
2)You said the render must be like a next gen scene. Does it mean that I should do a High version and a Low rez for in-game??
Many Thanks in advance.
Mecos: All I can find are Theseus and the minotaur and Theseus and the Centaur, both are sort of similar to the sketch you provided. Here they are in prospective order

My badā¦
I should never post a challenge after midnight. (I have edited that text out) Sorry for the mis understanding.
A little question after what you said about textures:
Due to the nature of sculpts and such, are models rendered with displacement considered as modeling?
thank you. i keep running into those too. iāll use them as inspiration⦠but i swear i saw one posed like my sketch, it was so much more dramatic - but if i didnāt see it, then iāll claim authorship
i think it might of been a recent interpretation in digital form. again my memory is vague.
Well, I would assume that classically inspired works for this challenge. Just do your pose using those 2 as reference/inspiration. What say you Roberto?
Hi Iām new to the HMCs. Iāve got a few questions about it.
-How much time will I have to create the model?
-Am I allowed to just create a classical style statue that didnāt actually exist before?
-Does it have to be a statue? How about the subject of the painting being modeled and textured?
sorry if I had a lot of questions. I was wanting to join the HMCs ever since I started following it starting from the 80ās Cartoon HMC.

time: thereās info in the main thread of the challenge - you have till Nov 2
to your second question - yes, itās been answered before in one of the info threads
it can be a painting and you can texture it, but modeling is most important in the judging
Hi. Im new in HCM , and before I start this challenge I want to make sure one thing.
Q : When I use any piece of art for inspiration,
Do I need to keep the same coutume and the same pose as the reference work?
Well, I just want to make sure, cuz Im new in here ,ha~
actually Iāve never tried any challenge in CGSociety , this one is gonna be my first challenge ,
Sorry for cross posting
When you say that āthe original piece used for inspiration can be in 2d (a painting) or 3d (A bust or sculpture) and an artist my be inspired by a style of artā, does it mean that I can pick up as reference an image from a movie also?
And what if the subject is not classical, but for example a japanese samurai? Is it a valid reference?
Thanks in advance
You can do a ajapanese Samurai if it is based on a piece of art.
For example you can check the online galleries of the
Freer Gallery of Art
I have a question about the orto shots - for a diarama that Iām making - a top, back view wonāt make any sense and will not show much [especially the back shot which will be a 1color plane ;)] - do I still have to include them?
I had the same issue on the last challenge as mine was a diorama what I did was I just did the wires for the scene as the camera angle shown and then did orto top back and what not for just my building in your case the girl alone herself. That seemed to work the character is the only thing really that would be nice to see from all angles
