Has anyone gone “Thunder cats hooooooooo” yet?
HCR MINI-Challenge #19: 80's Cartoons
Hi, and what a great challenge theme!
Roberto, i have a question about the categories…we have to specify what categorie are trying to be in, or we just submite an image based on one or more categories and you decide in wich one fits better? I say it because the planification(or the anticipation)requiered in one case or the other are diferent.
And are displacement maps from zbrush allowed for the final entry?
By the way, i´m looking for start an HORDAK related image, wich i used to draw a lot when i was quite younger .
Cheers.
hello i’m new to all of this and my english ain’t so good. can anyone tell me what a WIP is or WIP thread. thank u
Work In Progress. A thread that shows the steps you are taking towards your finished model.
Welcome to the board.
Well, this might just be a good opportunity to participate in a challenge, I’ve been around for some time checking out but I would love to get into this. I’m going for a spaceship. I had a hard time choosing between Ulysses 31’s Odysseus, Captain future’s Future Comet and Captain Harlock’s Arcadia (there are actually two designs for this one, a green and a blue) and I chose the Green Arcadia, it’s a mean looking ship allright.
Hello all,
First time posting and it took the love of the eighties 'toons to bring me out of my silence. Im an architectural visualizer by trade so this’ll be my first vehicle (not really a character man) depending on what i choose so be gentle! I’d like to ask whether a cartoon i have in mind is suitable to use, it is certainly 80’s but it is a feature film and was not made into a series (from what i know). The link to the imdb is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090065/. The film is a huge childhood favourite and got me into Sci-Fi, but no one i know seems to have heard of it!
I would love to recreate the name sake of this film, the hero’s spaceship “Starchaser”! I was going to start this for myself anyway so this thread is the perfect catalyst! PLEASE say i can use it! If not then like FICTIS i’ll go for another spaceship, the other favourtie i can think of is the Thundercats intial escape ship from the Exodus movie which the converted into their Cat’s Lair, or of course the ever reliable ThunderTank itself! Best of luck to all.
Nice challenge Roberto it really brings back old memories i wont be participating in this one cuz i really busy ad work but i look forward to the 90 challenge than Ill start with pirates of the dark water. I will check regularly to see what goods theyre making.
Good luck folks
I am excited to start this challenge. I would like to try for the diorama, but definitely want to do a character. I haven’t had the opportunity to delve into a side project for a bit, so it’s time. First on to research…
I have been waiting for an excuse to do 80’s toons for soo long now.
And here it is and I’m swamped with work.
I do hope I can find the time to participate because I want to be
a part of this.
Best of luck to all of you.
hey all!
I am new to this forum but am very excited to join you!
after hearing about this contest in particular I was very excited and knew I’d have to make an account to get in on this!
Hopefully there’ll be lots more contests as cool as this one! I’d definately get on the back of doing a transformers one!!!
I’m planning on doing skeletor as well - more or less a straight take on the 2002 Four Horsemen version seeing as I love that one so much.
If I have time I’m going to try and make at least one of his infamous henchmen as well, and I’d start with Trapjaw, the guy I orginally mulled over making for something like this.
question though: planning on doing that, which category would that fall under? If I get to make just Skeletor I’d assume it would go under original character interpretation? If I get to more than one of them would that change my category? Thanks a bunch guys!
gonna go start my WIP thread now!
'I’d like to enter, just for the spirit of it tbh, Im relatively new to 3d and this will be my first challenge! I hope people will be postive with my work and help each other."
I’m all for that!I’m only hoping to improve.I don’t expect to win anything.I also hope to get to know people who are familiar with the programs so I can better myself.I’m 25 and my experience is with more conventional art.I only hope to get into the industry someday.
Good luck K.I.T-
Oh man, I totally forgot about M.A.S.K. !! I had a lot of those toys as a kid. I don’t think there was ever cooler toys than ones that could change into other things.
Hi, just a little doubt. The deadline is 12:00 pm in wich place? I mean, I’m from Spain, so if it’s 12:00 pm from USA, I have a couple of hours more to finish it.(and sure I will be until the last minute)
Thats all. Thanks.
Roberto - Are we supposed to post our final entries on this thread as well as our WIP thread? Or will there be a new thread where we post our final entries?
I haven’t done one of these challenges before, so I’m not sure. Thanks!
OMFG I want to do this one. Gosh I’ve been away from Cgtalk for awhile and forgot about the cool challenges. I hope it’s not too late to get started. It’ll take me about a week. I’ve always had great ideas for thundercats & he-man. Two of my favorite childhood afterschool cartoons.
Here’s the link to my WIP thread. Getting close to the final renders, very exciting.

The goal was to recreate the ulysse31 cartoon in modern style ( clone wars in this case )
and have fun to do it !:)
This cartoon was very special, because transposing a Greek mythology in a cartoon being held in science fiction's futur!! ( I've lurn a lot of mythology with this cartoon )
The result was just amazing and fairy-like ! ( And I don't forget the music !! )
I quickly realized that the character design was very modern for the 80'
fortunately, I fell on the fabulous artwork of Aleski Briclot !!
I spend roughly 80-90 hours on this including reasearch.
