Well for it being hard, you seem to be doing it some good justice so far:) Nice base model, everything looks really clean.
Are you going to try to texture him as well?
HARDCORE MODELING!: WETA WORKSHOP TRIBUTE: The Cave Troll
Thanks, pal. Of course, looking forward to give it some fine detail and textures. But gotta work on the base mesh a little longer.
Cheerio.
I’m doing a version of this character for a rigging assignment so i’d love to see how yours turns out!
great base mesh so far, i’m uncomfortable starting off in zbrush so i’m making a animation friendly mesh in Max first then onto sculpting. Any tips you have as you go would be fantastic for me as i’m much more of a beginner than yourself. Keep up the good work,
Steve
BrettSinclair: Thanks pal! Nah, I have nothing else to do at nights, pretty cool hobby I’d say
I’m more interested in yours though, hope you find time too.
LordMcGoat: Lord of the Anatomy is here and now it’s more stressful! Yikes!
Do you plan on participating the fun?
nmcelmury: thanks, glad you liked it, here is a turntable for it.

puddyman: Well, generally I’m beginner myself too and I have no knowledge about rigging whatsoever. Modeling wise, I mostly read forums/how-tos/books, learned that muscle flow is very important(in Brett, Intervain’s cgtalk expression challenge entries) and then memorized every single muscle’s name in the human body. Did not really make that much difference though, still need to check refs. Did I used fully flow in this chap? No, don’t really have time for that. If something fails in the process, it’s okay, I’d learn something. I started with zsphere, it looked way way uglier than this fellow though, then sculpted more, then imported it into maya and for rough retopo. (I hope I get the question and answered properly, and hope it was not overdo
)
Texturing: Zbrush Zaplink + Adobe Photoshop Combo.
Oh I wish man, seems like a great challenge, but don’t have the time at the moment. Lord of anatomy hah I think you may be being a bit generous. Lord of the dance, hmm yes perhaps, perhaps…
Jeepster: thanks pal
LordMcGoat: I wish I had your eyes
Well, too bad (or maybe good for you) that you haven’t got the time.
Blocked some muscles, not quite happy yet and not yet start on his head, he has a weird look, hopefully capture that one at the end.
looking really good.
Does look more muscular than in the movie.
Maybe he should have been more robust in the movie cause he looked too jelly.
great work.
Jeepster: thanks man, how is kong going?
Nothingness: thanks for the feedback, you are completely right about that. The fact that I’m not good enough, I can’t just form fat without blocking some muscles, feels a bit weird. Right or wrong I kinda know where the muscles right now. I’ll probably intruduce some fat to shoulders, arms and legs after sculpting some deep details.
A little update, sculpted some face details, hopefully finish head this weekend. Harsh critiques are most welcomed!
The wrinkles might seem a little deeper than the cave troll cause I want to use the mask fully to texture.
Thanks.
Thanks PKT, glad you liked it!
I started to pose him and gave him more details. Still WIP.
If you think something is off with it, please shoot.
this render is a bit off, lot of detail now are in the dark areas…
but anyway, it looks cool, are you plan to polypaint/texture it? i read you want to calculate maps from the model, so come on
Thanks bzsolt, I’ll fix that :D. And yes, after looking at it for a while and fixing some possible errors, I’ll start generating maps for the cave troll.
Cheers~
Edit: typo
thanks Paul. Yeah, I wanted to try if it was working… now can’t back to the original for a while.
Here is an another update. I’m getting there. After that, I’m not sure what I want to do though, still have time.
