HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: Skeletor yo

#1

So, I had some free time and was itching to get a try at one of these 80’s Cartoons. I knew it was going to be a he-man character, all dude to my girls love of the cartoon. As far as reference material I used the he-man lunch box

and took my own liberties sculpting. After much thought and a days worth of z-brushing I cam up with this. Hope u like and critiques much welcomed!

ok, put in about 3 hrs in before bed. I wanted to place my Skeletor in a scene, this would also let me bust out a small environment! After mulling over a few ideas I decided on him sitting on a throne would make an interesting piece. I am still not happy with the final pose but it will have to dude. The main part was just establishing a sense of scale, which i am happy with.

I love the hard angled face, though he’s so fleshy. Where’s the skull.

Looks like you are going for something similar to the movie version! Nice work so far. It will be interesting to see where you’ll take it.

Cheers!

I hear ya on, Skeletor not being a skull. I always had the idea Skeletor was a not skull but a human that had his face half melted away half mutated. The other reason was, making a skull felt a little campy and by having a fleshy face would potray a darker character.

Thanks RazorsE, hope fully I will not run out of steam before the end…

ok an Update, I rocked some concept work for the environment before jumping into 3d. I decided to go with a hard edge feel to Skeletor’s Snake Mountain. After 3-4 hours I had a few different ideas and a general style down. I am happy with the work, but still unclear on which design path to follow.

A quickie before I head off to bed. I had the chance to work on the throne over the weekend. I will end up using the first of the two below. The skeletons look nice, but being they where not made during this project it would be wrong for me to use them.

Few more days to go, and I still need to do my taxes… I believe I have finished the throne, I am not stressing about it much, being that it is only going to be a background element. As for Skeletor, I started off by creating a general sketch to establish an outfit and body size. I am hoping to portray him as a tragic figure in a Romantic realist style. For reference I am looking at the work of Louis-Ernest Barrias. By creating a sense of rhythm early on, I hope the final sculpt will just come together.

lookin’ real good arjun… going to keep watching.

Thanks Jole, I will try not to disappoint!

Getting there, I hope to be done before the week is threw… Got the staff done, this is the skull on top. I am happy the way it turned out and got to make it all out of zSpheres!

#12

work so far, just finished the body. I realized I still need a lot more practice working on anatomy…

#13

Man, I love the throne with the skeletons. It’s superb. The idea is great and a throne of this for real would be amazing. The skull of the staff is also good, but Skeletor’s face doesn’t have such a good looking for my like. I prefer just bones.

I want to see how you have designed the body.

the skull is cool, but ever seen him talk it looks so funny!

#16

Ok folks, stayed up all night to finish this, but can sure the extra days! I super happy with the work and feel that I have gotten a better understanding of z-bursh, and that was the main goal for me during the project.

Enjoy!

#17

I like it, but I miss the skeletons. Anyway, it’s a good job. I like the style you’ve used. It’s cool.
