HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: She-Ra

#121

Thanks, mate!

Unfortunately I havent had much time to spend on this yesterday either and before that had wasted a lot of time on fixing f-ed up Maya Weights-Normalization. I really should have done this in XSI from the start, but now its way too late to switch over. Boy, Maya rigging is great, but skinning is so f-ed up and downright primitive stupid. I really had forgotten almost all about how bad it really is! I hate this bullshit "work-from-the-outside-in-and-lock-all-weights-when-you're-done-with-something-and dont-touch-the-smooth-brush"-workflow. I really thought it would be good practice to get back in touch with Maya workflows, but no surprise... she's still the same old bitch. Ah well, guess I wont be making that mistake again and faithfully keep all my character work in XSI from here on, as I have also done for previous challenges. lol It really is a days vs hours effort, well at least for me. ;)

Well, I have until tonight 12pm server time, which is 2am local time here. Maybe I can still put something somewhat presentable together. It's gonna be a close call though, even if I dont run into any unforeseen issues.

Anyways, this has been fun, so ....
Cheers, great work everybody and many thanks for all your comments and encouragements, guys!

#122

she’s gonna make it! She-Ra should make it! ahaha. Goodluck!

#123

Totally understand. I dunno why ad dont port over max’s skinning set up, ita a breeze. Make your bones, depeding on their dimensions you get different sized envelopes, tweak one side of the and copy over to the other, then paint weights on problem areas on one side and mirror the weghts in one click. I think is better than xsi’s setup too. I hate skinning in maya. But there is loads its good at.
Anyay, you got till friday, so you should be done.
Good luck.

#124

hahah… looks like the roberto star is shinning on you. now you HAVE to finish.
go go go…

ps. i always hated the skinning tools in maya aswell. which resulted in no fully rigged characters. hahah…

I’m really curious as how She-Ra’s is looking by now. The clothes look fantastic anyways.
I thought that skinning was just a pain in general. But I from what i’m gathering here it’s just Maya…

#126

I’m curious too, your project is very very clean, always a pleasure to see new progress!

#127

arrgh!.. hurry and post again. looking forward to this one immensely - and thank you for being so detailed in your explanation of modeling techniques, i can’t believe how much I’ve picked up just from reading your posts!

#128

please do pull through, you have my support.
really respect the amount of thought that went into your work,
hang in there, Mr. Detail Freak with the Bruce Lee avatar!

#129

Thanks, guys!

I worked on this all night yesterday until the wee hours today and will continue on as time permits until the last minute. No time for current wip shots though, sorry! Unless some distraction comes up completely out of the blue, you should see this in some form or another in the voting thread tomorrow. Elaborate texturing is out of the question though.

Cheers!

#130

Definitely cheering you on, and definitely watching for more of your work!
Go go go!

#131

You are almost there mate, the deadline now is on Friday ill hope you can make it as I really love the way its looking.

She-Ra will make it! It would really suck if something distracts you now just when your so close. Go go go!:bounce:

Thanks a lot for all your support and encouragement, guys! It’s much appreciated! I hope you wont be disappointed with the final result.

I'll reply to your final image posts, write more here and post more images probably some time tomorrow.

While I wont be able to fully texture her on time, I still have at least a cartoon-style shaded Maya-MR beauty-render, maybe even with some Shave-Hair to finish. To be on the safe side, since you never know what might happen, I fired up ZB, applied one of my favorite Matcaps (Weathered Bronze by BGEN) and here's my tentative final entry:

Original Interpretation: She-Ra Princess of Power

               ARTIST NAME:
                 Felix Lahme

                 ORIGINAL CONCEPT ART:
Posting just one reference image seems unfair to all the artists who contributed to my inspiration, so please look in the wip thread listed below for all my references.

               BEAUTY RENDER:

(I am still working on a proper Maya/MR beauty render, so this one is just a placeholder for now)

The above image is kinda far away, so here's a little closer for more detail:

               Bottom:
This one is basically an upskirt-shot, so for multiple reasons, I took the liberty to omit it.

                 WIREFRAMES:

(These are placeholders as well until I get a proper wireframe render set up in Maya.)

                 SOFTWARE USED:
Maya with NEX & Syflex and numerous essential custom Mel-scripts and plug-ins, Mudbox, headus UVLayout and ZBrush for Matcap renders. Weathered Bronze Matcap by BGEN.

Edit:For the beauty render in the following post, I used Mental Ray and PS for the cover comp.

                 TIME:
I lost track, but it must easily be in excess of 100 to 150 hours.

                 DESCRIPTION:
My intention was to recreate She-Ra in her classic pose, as she might possibly appear in a live-action movie. This doesn't mean I was going for a photo-realistic replica with truly battle-ready outfit, but rather tried to put together a somewhat realistic model with a costume functional enough that it could actually be built by costumers and prop-artists and be relatively casually worn by an actress without imparing her ability to act. Also I tried to stay as true as possible to the challenge of modeling and hence everything you see in the renders, right down to the eyebrows and lashes (no PaintFX or Shave-Conversions) is modeled geometry. Only the body was sculpted after modeling a detailed base and except the eyeballs, which have a rather crude iris-texture on them, the whole model has basic shaders applied only, no textures yet.

This has been great fun and a tremendous amount of outstanding work has been produced by all participants!

Cheers and congrats to everybody for their individual achievment! :)
