ohhh…sorry about that too I don’t know how to delete a post in this thread my first time hehe. Yeahh the toy’s helped me though figure how to box out my model though :D. Hopefully by tomorrow I’m done,if school work doesn’t get in the way. As always
HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: Ninja Robots
oookkk…ive just finished the model of the head today. tried playing Dawn of War 2 yesturday and it was great! anyway her are the updates

Though I still feel something is wrong with it. It doesnt somehow satisfy me aside from the fact I suck at modeling but the proportions. Something feels wrong. If you happen to read this and notice the mistake do tell me so I can fix it right away. thnx
oh no…crap i haven’t been updating for ages! School work…arrgghh…anyway I’ll be updating now that I have time
ok…something weird is going on with maya. I’m on to texturing now and adding colors but the problem is, everytime I apply something like Blinn Red, it won’t show up unless you render it. Any suggestions on what to do before I reinstall Maya?
ok i got to model sometime today since school is choking me. I feel like I won’t even make it since our finals are well, on April 14! great! and deadline for this challenge is? April 15th right? I’m a gonner. The challenge is really fun I learned alot and was pushed to the limit of what I know but I “feel” like I won’t make it. I mean I still have to learn how to render properly, and I still don’t have a nice scene. I mean it’s in my head but I just can’t make it on computer. Sucks. Anyway I tried out this studio rendering tutorial on Cybertron, I wanted to learn how to do one and wanted to see how he’d look once rendered in Mentalray. So here are the results. C&C will really be appreciated.

I think he’s looking good but I’d like to see a little more of the angular approach that you see in the model. Perhaps you might want to work out how he’ll eventually be posed so you can make decisions about what reference to use for the proportions base on that final outcome?
Keep it up. Would be nice to see him posed
Replying to your texturing query here instead of over in the other thread since my answer is directed at this specific instance, ie, textures and the HcMC’s.
Don’t worry about texturing for these challenges - seriously, cool texture is all cool and stuff but this is the Hardcore MODELING challenge not the hardcore texturing hardcore models - the guys (and gals) that take the time to texture are all old hats here (sort of). Just get a nice render out.
Some tips for that:
3 point lighting tends to always make things look nice… check this video out

As to things to do for the render itself.
Ambient Occlusion is your friend - if you’d don’t know how to set it up (I think you’re in maya so this will explain) http://toi.bk.tudelft.nl/toi-pedia/index.php?title=Mental_Ray_Ambient_Occlusion_tutorial
Render out an ambient occlusion pass and then composite it with a standard (shadowless) render (in photoshop soft light blend looks quite nice generally).
If you stick to a lambert shader then setting up a diffuse pass, an AO pass, and a Shadow pass and then composite them together you should give you something fairly nice.
Posing is also a really good way to show off the model. Seriously don’t worry about texture get the model looking as awesome as you can.
@axiomatic- Thanks. I’ve actually had some sketches of him posing already. I thought of putting him in a battleworn city. I’ll be coloring my sketch in photoshop and mixing thm up together in after effects or in photoshop too to get the lighting right.
@GrogMcGee- Wow. Thanks a whole bunch! hhmm my first verions of him was only with Red and White colors without the other colors around his armor. I wanted to make him battleworn you know with all the scratches and dirt but my brother said it wouldn’t be a good idea to do so since i didn’t learn texturing early enough and im completely blank on them. But after what you’ve said i thought bout it and well yeah it is after all a hardcore modeling challenge:D ima start learning those ligthing techniques since its weekend already. Again thanks a whole bunch:beer:
update…got to make the post I want. Now as for the background I guess I’ll be sketching it and coloring it for photoshop. The scen would be some battleworn city. Withthe pilot beside Cybertron. Well I haven’t included the pilotyet here in this render and if you noticed he has no hands i suck at modeling hands lol

C&C most welcome
oookkk…I know there’s still no texture. I’m working on it still learnin’ but since I got to learn rendering quicker thanks to Digital Tutor’s Mental Ray Tips & Tricks, I tried doing what the tutorial taught me and here are the results. As for the floor where he’ll be in I was thinking of using Terragen & Maya together to make a really nice flooring and as for the background I’ve already sketched it out I’ll be posting my sketch here of the background. And as for Joe Maya? I dunno. I’m having fun with Cybertron so far I think I won’t include him anymore. Besides 1 month more it’s submissions and my final exams at school:bounce:

update on renders with texture. Hope this looks ok…I am modeling his pilot next. Gonna start uploading shots of it by tomorrow or if not by friday…

I am trying to get a render though which is kinda like sunset, so if anyone could give an idea how so coz ive been tweaking 3 point lights for Key,Fill and Rim Ligths already with this and 4 directional lights at the back with different colors, directions and intensity to give some color out of it but it feels more like an afternoon rather than sunset…
here’s an update of cybertrons pose. I felt that the first one sucks since no one tells me if it’s ok or not
anyway here’s the new pose…

The first one looked good but this one definitely looks better.
Edit: Okay it took me a while to realize he had a sword in the original pose. Maybe the angle was the problem. Still the second pose looks better to me.
oh man…i knew something felt wrong with no comments bout him, i feel like i modeled something knda stupid and simple though. I mean it is after all hardcore modeling challenge:cry:. Anyway I’ll be updating this later at school since I’ve gota 5 hour break:surprised ima think more on how to make this look better.:wip:
aw man all classrooms with maya 8 have classes. I can’t update here. I’m still choosing whether to model the background scene or just draw it up and color in photoshop. I wil not quit though in modeling the enemy for the scene:)
just an update on the enemy. 5 hours break in school what to do?:applause: thank god the prof and students left the room already so I could use the place.
my only worries now is when i import it to cybertron’s scene and duplicate it 2 times since i wanted to make three enemies, im thinking Maya would crash or go super slow with some polys on smoothed.

Depends on your system specs of course but some guys have posted scenes in the millions range.
well i hope my computer can take it. I don’t really like rendering at school since I wait and do nothing :bounce: . What did u mean btw with “but some guys have posted scenes in the millions range”
