HARDCORE MODELING!: 80’s Cartoon: Ninja Robots

Funny, me and my brother kept talking about the old days cartoons way back when i was still a small kid there were Swat Cats, Thundercats, Centurions, Captain Planet, Scooby-Doo, Ninja Turtles, Johny Quest and a few more that i could still remember when I was 8 years old. Suddenly my brother shows me links of Centurions and I kept laughing like hell remembering those days and then next thing you know he sends me a link from cgsociety, showing this Hardcore-mini challenge and it was Ace McCloud of Centurions being modeled by username japetus, and then my brother asks me if I’m game to join since he will to just for fun and so it got me thinking, this’l be my first thread here in cgsociety and first contest so I said why not? Hopefully college requirements wont affect my time with this so I could submit on time. This’l be really fun! :smiley: And so now here I am.

Thinking that almost all of my favorite shows were taken except Swat Cats since it’s 90’s I suddenly remembered this robot show I used to watch in Cartoon Network, and that was Ninja Robots! Or Ninja Senshi Tobikage, hopefully someone knows this here since I’ve been looking for reference materials and came to see one of this posts done by some people who didn’t even know what Ninja Robots was. Anyway I’m planning to model the cool and mysterious Tobikage or Cybertron and his united human partner Joe Maya.

so far this is what I’ve got. Decided to model the toy version since the cartoon version is boxy,ima go with a smooth looking type body and this happens to look more heroic than the cartoon one :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess making a toy model sucks then the real cartoon

Anyway you guys may have noticed but yeah im a noob :stuck_out_tongue: a 16 year old noob too excited to wait for the school to teach us 3d so i started working on it and this is my first thread but not my first 3d i’ve done lots but not as hard as this hope u guys can help me become a great artists like all of y’all!:stuck_out_tongue:

Hello James…

Excelent work dude…

the only critics that i have are 2 things: the shoulder it seems to small… if you scale it up a little bit , and put in a 45º angle like your reference the result will be different. And another thing, that piece in front of the waist area… it looks like a skirt ( doesn’t ?) it looks small too, and the bottom part makes a ‘V’ shape, your model is making that shape but i think that the bottom part needs to go down a little bit.

Keep goin’ ,

//cheers

Hi Helder,

thanks for the critics :smiley: actually I am in confusion right now coz most of my references are from the toys which have exaggerated features where as the cartoons tend to be more proportioned so yeah I am quite confused. ill attach my current references. I’ll keep in mind the skirt like armor though still feel wrong maybe thats why I feel like the leg is wrong too :stuck_out_tongue:

You’re making good progress. I don’t see any major problems so it’s still a little early for me to give constructive crits. As for the legs I think it may have to do with the position their in while your modeling them. Most of the references you posted have them swung out on a ball joint. Plus the “cloth” cover in front is much more rigid right now than it will be.

#19

Thanks :smiley: well actually Ive got another prob if I was to render the side view, Ive had so many references of this robot yet there’s no specific support for the legs hiding under the skirt like covering, sigh that’s what’s hard with old cartoons which isn’t that popular. Little references…

Oh…man…my bad… dude…
I was comparing with the reference that you post for ‘Blueprint’:

It sucks sometimes the differences between some Cartoons on the 80’s, realism, and action-figures. I’m having some issues on my model too. Anyway…keep going … can’t wait to see it finished…
