i present
PANTS!

I think this is the fastest i’ve ever worked on something like this…especially with an organic type model, i usually struggle…i’m almost surprising myself by doing things i didn’t think i was capable of doing…ahh the wonders of the hardcore challenge
i’m just gathering some wires now and will have them up soon…

i wouldn’t expect to learn much from them though…i don’t exactly model conventionally…i model for the final look…not necessarily for neatness…lol
but as you can see everything in the renders is modeled…theres no mudbox-ing or zbrush-ing to be seen here…and there won’t be…i’m determined to completely model this whole thing by hand
omg Robo, keeps getting better and better.
start the productionline i’d say… wish i was a kid again and that i could play with one of those :)… kamehamehaaa…
@ RageOfAges : he probably takes those senzu beans!!
I would shudder at doing those pants in geometry. they look great though. This is definitely looking like the greatest action figure ever.
@RageOfAges: well you see…it’s all in the timezones…lol…i’ve been spending about 8 hours or so a day on it (being unemployed helps) and getting (mostly) a full nights sleep…
@xenox: thanks…i’d kill for a senzu bean right now…
@WyattHarris: I shuddered when I started planning them out…with the alternating overlapping it was a chore…lol…and I just realised how awesome it would be to have a 3d printer right now…
and in other news…i’ve completed the base hands…the look a little funny on Goku at the moment but I’ll be posing them later on so it’ll be ok…its the first time i’ve ever successfully modeled a hand so I’m quite chuffed…

Hello Robo3687
Great Modelling , looks good so far…
the only critic that i have is related to the Trapezius area, it is a little odd that part, maybe that part is too long, and the neck is too short.
here’s some references to the neck area:

Hope that helps
keep going dude, your model is rockin’
//cheers
very tight modeling! nice lighting setup too. Would like to see wireframes eventually. Keep up the great work!
@Itsgallus: in most of the ref pics i have goku has fairly huge traps and quite a short neck…but thanks for the ref anywhoo
@japetus: thanks…wires are at the bottom of page 3
I’ve just started trying to pose goku…wow its so fun (sarcasm obviously)…i think i’ve find my achilles heel for this challenge…lol…i mean it’s getting there…it’s just taking a lot of work…
I am in no position to crit you, amazing work.
But…I will get my opinion out there I gues…
The body is spot on IMO for DBZ, but the face looks a little too DB:GT if you get what I am saying?
http://dbz495.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/goku.jpg
See how his face looks older? Maybe it is just me though…keep up the good work, cant wait to see this finished!
@EvilZurg: yeh i know what you mean about the face…i’m still trying to work out whats off…i’m sure i’ll figure it out…lol…i think it might be that theres not enough definition in the face…like the surface of it is mostly flat…maybe thats it…
an update now on my posing progress…lets be frank…i can’t rig to save my life…i tried and failed…badly…
so instead i’m taking the ‘robo method’ which i describe as: cut model up into bits…reposition…model in the gaps…heh…you’ll see what i mean in the pic…i haven’t attached the arms yet…

the hands aren’t posed and are only roughly rotated into position…overall i think the ‘robo method’ is kinda working…kinda
Paul I dont know if you use Zbrush, but if you do you can use the transpose tools to get a good blocking in of the pose you like. If you havent used transpose it’s really easy. Just mask off everything you don’t want to move (ie mask out everything except the left arm) then use the move/rotate/scale tools to get the arm into position. One of the reasons I love modo so much is that it combines polytools and sculpting tools into the same platform. Plus it`s got a pile of demormers that make posing relatively simple without a rig. It can’t handle near the geometry that zbrush can, but it makes for a very efficient workflow nonetheless. Regardless, you’re doing a good job of capturing his essence with this “robo method”.

@RageOfAges: not a big fan of Zbrush actually…lol…I’ve heard about the transpose stuff but the whole workflow of Zbrush craps me up the wall…I’m a Mudbox man…
that said I think I’ll stick with my ‘Robo’ method as it’s actually working better than i thought it would…lol…
still haven’t attached the arms…will do that tomorrow morning…but i did pose the hands…they still need some tweaking but i’m happy with them

I’ve seem a few others that use the ‘robo’ method.
Seems pretty sound to me, the results are good so far.
You’ve captured the pose well so far. Again coolest action figure ever.
@xenox:thanks
@cbeese: thanks but i’m sure as everyone else gets going someone will surpass me…lol…they usually do…
@samartin: thanks
@WyattHarris: i really wish i had a 3d printer so i could actually have this on my desk…lol
and now an update…finally attached the arms…they need a bit of fixing in places but the general look is there…added a ‘kamehameha’ for fun…
