HARDCORE MODELING!: 80's Cartoon: Ace McCloud from Centurions!

#1

Hey all! Gonna model a character from the cartoon I have fond memories of. Ace McCloud from The Centurions! I think I’ll go into zbrush a bit and prep a simple character mesh. Good luck to everyone! Here’s some reference:

Ahhh…Centurions was a great show. Back when cartoons were actually worth watching an had a decent storyline. Good luck!

#3

Thanks! I agree…it was the golden age of saturday cartoons.

Here’s my first WIP. Just roughing out the body in Max. I’ll be tearing off pieces and constructing armor and cloth. A lot of him will be covered by mechanical parts so I’m not spending too much time on the body at the moment.

#4

I don’t remember this show, but the character looks really fun to model, good luck!

#5

hey mike!

don’t think i ever seen this show before (-i grew up with 2 channels, heheh…).
the character looks good nonetheless.
looks like you are off to a great start. good luck.

Hey hey, good luck Murderface. I never actually saw the show but my Mom got us the toys for Christmas one year. They all had interchangeable weapons and gadgets, really cool stuff.

#7

Sweet! I actually had this one when I was a kid. I also saved money for the upgraded weapon system… cool figures and fun show.

Looking forward to see more

Centurions ! I love this show so much, and is the ultimate reason why 80´s were the best decade ever.
Good luck with your modeling !

#9

Here’s an update. I finished the helmet enough for now:

#10

Working on some of his armor now, specifically his jet pack. I’ve also cut out the polys i’ll be using to create the armored area of his suit. They are just turbosmoothed at the moment.

#11

looks like a good start…keep it up…

#12

dang i love Centurions! I was still a kid when I was watching this…wwoo nice goodluck

#13

coming along nicely! go go go!

#14

I’ve been racking my brain since I saw this thread, but I can’t remember the centurions for the life of me. I watched tons of cartoons when I was a kid, too. Just about everything that aired. Maybe it was never on air in my neck of the woods.
Looks like a solid block-in stage.

#15

Hmm…I guess I have some choices to make. I guess I’ll be creating a plausible hybrid between the cartoon, comic, and action figure version. There are some variations between the three and even between episodes in the cartoon. The comic version seems to be more based on the action figure, but is more interesting looking. Perhaps i’ll move this to “show your interpretation of a character.” There are some more details I’d like to add like paneling and a windscreen on the helmet which are nonexistant or difficult to see in the reference. More updates to come tonight!

Edit: Think i’m gonna give his flight suit layer a classic space look like this guy:

#16

looks good so far keep it up! I like the space suit look in the ref image good choice.

#17

Here is the bomb thingy that is strapped to his chest. I also started messing around with the toon shader a bit, see if there is anything i might like there. Anyone know if there is a way to get a sketchier sorta look? Like subtle cross hatching as it moves from shaded to shadowed?

#18

That is a really good result from the toon shader.

#19

Built a head for the helmet and started no the armor. For some reason one of the eyes is freaking out, will get that fixed later…

#20

Lookin good dude keep going, I can’t say the same for my character… Jake Rockwell.

ohhhh 3ds max… lol
