Hard surface normal maps without gradients on flat surfaces?

#1

Hello!

I am fooling around for days now with this problem and i just can’t get it fixed.

I made an object in Modo (here a cube to visualize my problem), set all Vertex Normal angles to zero to have hard edges and exported as FBX file.

I wanna use Mudbox to add some details to the surface and bake a normal map with just those details to use in a game engine.

So here’s what i got:

A simple straight cube in Mudbox.
Then i set my subdivision parameters to keep all hard edges like this:

After a couple of subdivisions i start sculpting in some details so it looks like this:

Finally i bake a normal map from the HP to the LP object using standard settings (no smoothing or anything on either object) and get a normal map like this:

All the sides of the cube have a gradient on the normal map, which fucks up my lighting completely
The cube looks like this with the normal map applied:

Is there a way to let Mudbox know not to do apply any kind of changes to the “untouched” surfaces? I only wanna have the my details in the normal map and no gradients on flat surfaces.

Would be awesome if someone could let me know where i mess this up!
Thanks in advance!

have you turned off smoothing the target in the bake settings…
and turned on use creased edges…?

i would recommend to bake hard surface stuff in xnormal…
