Hi! I’m trying to model for an half life mod but I’d never modeled in lowpoly, so I don’t know how many olygons I have to use. Critics are required

There is a HL2 Faq out there that has the polycount limits for the various types of models…I believe its somewhere around 6K for player models, 4K for creatures, and 2k for player-weapon models.
A general rule of thumb would be to aim for 1000 for player models, and to split your budget for v_weapon models between the arms and the weapon itself, to come in finally at no more than 2000 combined - for example I did some models for the mod Natural Selection recently, and the NS arms are 800 polys, so I’d just try aiming for 1000 polys for all my player models and all my weapon models, simply because it’s a nice round number.
Now, NS is a pretty demanding game graphically, so if you’re modelling for a less-demanding mod you can probably up those numbers a little, but I’d still try to keep it under 1500 for players and 2500 for v_weapons (including arms).
(NB This is considerably above what Valve suggest in the modelling guidelines in their HL SDK, but those are old guidelines and the average PC today will more than be able to handle such polycounts - the main limitation is the HL engine itself, rather than peoples’ computer specs)
As for p and w weapon models, it’s a little harder to come up with a good guideline. You should aim to make them less detailed than the v_models, but unless you’re making models for low-end users you can still put a fair amount of detail in - aim for around 500, probably.
Hei, thanks very much for the feedback Mouse! I think I’ll follow your advice. I hope you’ll help me in the other phases too
1000 polys for a model?
umm you can use more than that. We’re set on second gen systems now. 2500-3000 is safe.
lol you guys are soo fuunny
and have no clue what your talking about
half life 2 player models can be 7500 polies
weapon models stick around 2000 or less
