Hair and particle instancing stand-ins?

#1

Hi again;] I am looking for a way to scatter lots of trees along a surface to make a deep forest and i was thinking of using stand-ins, but they don’t seem to work with particle or hair instancing. I guess it’s because you have to actually duplicate them, not instance them or something like that. Would there be any workaround for this? I tried using a scatter script instead, but it doesn’t work well for large amounts of trees i need. Maybe an Ice Scatter compound would be fast enough for large quantities of objects? Or is there an easier way of making a forest like that --> http://www.ristohurme.com/forest%20hill.jpg <-- ? Vue isn’t an option unfortunately, we lack the rendering horsepower it seems to need… Any ideas?

Might be worth looking into doing this with E-on’s Vue software. Using xStream in combo with XSI.

Hair instancing should work although possibly not as well as as using something like Vue. Make sure you are putting your models under a group so they can be instanced by the hair. it should work as I’ve been doing it repeatedly over the past few weeks with no problems.

I thought Junki created some scripts for this and video tutorial (for making forest with grids) - try searching…
