Gun Barrel holes

#1

Hello, I’ve been looking for a way to make gun barrel holes without using booleans. For Max, I found this tutorial http://www.mgrote.com/tutorials/holes.php. It looks like the closest thing to the Bend modifier in Max is the Warp Tool. This doesn’t seem to be very precise though, I’d like to input the numeric value of the warp manually but I don’t know if that is possible.

Is there a tutorial for this type of thing in Blender that I might have missed? I’ve done numerous searches on the forums and otherwise and have not found much. If there is a thread dedicated to this please direct me to it and close this thread.

Can’t you deform by a curve?

Shift “w” to start warp type 360
Select all remove doubles.
Done

Total width will be double the offset from the 3d cursor.

You can use the same tutorial :cool:

Shell = Solidify modifier

Bend = Simple Deform modifier >> Bend. Mesh must be “enrolled” around Z Axis. Factor = 6.28. Apply the modifier and Remove Doubles to weld all the vertices (raise the Merge Threshold a little).

Meshsmooth >> interation 2 = Subdivision Surface modifier >> lvl 2

It depends. As Mordachai has just pointed out, the technique from the tutorial can be done directly. However, who knows, an opacity map (alpha map) might be just as good.

I personally have become a very big believer in the notion of keeping the geometry as simple as possible. Obviously you might need to create holes using the technique as described, but if the object isn’t going to be viewed close-up by anyone, who will know? Heck, you might be perfectly fine with a decal of darker gray colors, applied on top of a lighter base color. If no one’s actually going to see light shining through (as is the case in the reference photo) in your production, don’t bother to make 'em. If Hollywood movie sets have no back side, because no one will ever see them, then your models also don’t need to go one lousy inch beyond what someone will actually see.

Thanks for the help everyone, still not having any luck but I’ll keep at it. I’m pretty new to the program so I’m probably overlooking something so I’ll experiment more before bothering you all in the forum.

Mordachai - Thank you for the detailed instructions, I’ll keep trying until I get it to work.

sundialsvc4 - I would agree with you on the extra geometry thing most of the time and the benefits of an alpha mask. I’m more curious to see how this is done in Blender as I can see other uses for this type of deformation.
