Have you finalized the full design for each of these characters before you started working on this group image? Or are you designing on the fly? If you haven’t done fully finished designs for all of them, you should, because so much rides on the character designs for this type of image.

but im just not feeling it
like the poses are incredibly bland
i feel like they need to be doing … something …

I don’t know man, I feel like I don’t really understand lighting or color
like I look at this and work with it and its like I don’t really know where any of the lights are supposed to go or what color anything is supposed to be or something, feels like I’m just … guessing … or something … T_T

If you want them to look more expressive and not so bland, then you need to think about what each of their personalities are and then have them pose according to their personalities. A sassy/spunky character would stand with more of an attitude. An arrogant jerk would stand with more aggression and haughtiness. A shy/insecure character would try to shrink and hide. You get the idea.
