how do you make the grid appear when your trying to modelsomething???

Tools > Options > Modelling. Top left corner there is a check box for Grid

If you have zoomed out too far then the grid will not be displayed - at all

If you are not in a default Camera view (ie front, side, top etc) the grid will not be displayed
