Grassy field (how too?)

Actually Sas is right on the money. All you have to do is do lots of tests and tweaks. We’ve been able to get grass indistinguishable from the real thing when holding two images side by side. Using salt and pepper with Fractal reflections along with density gives you realistic dispersal and it’s incredible. It also helps to have a decent grass texture for the ground. Our first few attempts (okay… maybe a hundred or more) were off the mark, but in a few days we were able to get great grass. I was like you thinking that Sas wasn’t quite there yet - I was wrong. It most definitely is!

I wish there was a training dvd or tutorial out there for this. I would actually pay for a tutorial on making “uber-realistic” grass is sasquatch. Gonna keep at it.

It seems that most hair/fur plugins deliberately seperate you from making good grass.
I just tried Shave for Maya and damn, it needed 3+ hours to get something decent.

Foreground grass on the first picture was definately Photoshopped. Nothing “natural” about the scale. ;D

Sorry about the big bump . IvanB : can you post that Sas Grass again ? I am looking for a god grass for 2 days now. And that grass might be the thing.

Here's a quickie I did using Lush grasses and 3 terrains. The only terrain with a grass ecosystem is the closest one, and it has a falloff map so the density and size falloff rather quickly from the camera. It's not too bad, but I do see it's a bit splotchy.

DOF added in Photoshop.

Here’s another one with a coloring a bit more like the original one. DOF added in Pshop.

not bad chipp, it would just need alittle higher quality solidgrowth plant for the grass, linda´s solidgrowth grass is realy good, she´s one of my fav solidgrowth suppliers, but i think that for real closeup ones like your test render it would need alittle more quality atleast for the forefront.

hopefully real grass is easier to do real good in vue7 but it for sure is possible with v6 like you´ve shown yourself.

#41

Who is Linda?

#42

the maker of the solidgrowth plant series

#43

How about this

This is the Trunk, 3 package from Cornucopia

Or this quick test

By frozensun

The above is Wallie’s grass @ cornucopia, actually i prefer wallie’s grass over Linda but hands down her plants are the best.

#45

I hate you:thumbsup:

#46

Thanks. BTW the lighting was Ambient Base from my Spectral Skies 3 pack

#47

You mentioned earlier that only the closest terrain has the ecosystem. What kind of material did you use on the terrains in the background?

Very nice image, btw.

#48

Thanks. IIRC, the background texture is the basic grass, with the brown mixed layer removed.

#49

Thanks for the info.

It took me a while to figure out what “IIRC” meant.

Another example grass with vue:

#51

Have you writen any book on Vue?
Wow!
This ones awesome!
What did you use?

#52

Hey that one’s great! Did you use a purchased specimen or did you make your own (I think you did the last). I’m the lucky owner now of xStream for Mac so I’ll try to populate my own grassy fields soon.

No book written yet, I have a ways to go before I think about doing that.

For this image, I did use the content from cornucopia. There are a number of really good grass solutions that render very well.
