Graphics Assistance Init ....

#1

Hello Hashers -
I recently upgrade to A:M 2003. When I install to my machine, upon start up I get this message:
Graphics Assistance Initialization Failed.

Then i get a message about changing drivers or try a different screen resolution. Did both of those and when I get into the program I have to change to a different real time driver (direct 3d v3). Should I be thinking of a different video card? What are the differences between the 3d driver versions?

THanks for any help.

Try OpenGL.

Also, with the latest AM, I think you need at least 16-20MB of Video Ram. What kind of card do you have?

Hey Doug,

I have had the same kind of problem since 9.5m - the program crashes every single time just after the Graphics Assistance Initialization. I was running a Rage Fury Pro with 32MB and updated to all the latest drivers and it still never worked, regardless of whether it was in OpenGL or Direct3D. Like always, Hash Technical Support has been absolutely no help at all so, stupidly, I went ahead and bought the 10.0 upgrade CD and nothing changed.

I recently bought a GeForce 4 Ti4600 but that solved nothing, so if you spend a lot of money on a new card, be sure to save the receipt. I did and now have $250 to apply to my purchase of Lightwave.

Sorry to here that you are leaving AM. Bad way to go. I always appreciated you wars of cheese.

Make sure you also have Direct X 8.1 or higher installed.

Graphics cards are the bane of 3D software. My Radeon (64MB) works great with AM, but it’s OpenGL sucks in Cinema 4D. My laptop sucks for AM (Mobility Rage) but is okay with Cinema…Just look at the list of incompatible stuff with Maya and certain cards…it’s enough to make you cry.

My ATI Rage Fury has 32MB and has never had a problem with A:M. I’m using driver 4.13.7078

It wasn’t the latest driver…the latest when I checked about a year ago didn’t get along with the ATI DVD software player so I went back to this version, which had better OpenGL than the driver it shipped with. Yes, something that significant can change. This driver had many more functioning OpenGL settings than what it shipped with.

Compatibility problems do exist between many cards and programs. Not just video cards…audio cards have problems with some audio programs as well.

And systems to boot…the ProTools site is pretty finicky about what it can run on and with…oh, well…don’t ya just love computers…

But PJC is right…check your DirectX version…that could be a problem.

Thanks John, glad you liked my puny little series. But it will be a while before AM is uninstalled on my computer - I may have $250 for Lightwave, but that still leaves me $1200 short. In the meantime, I’ll keep plugging away on a new episode with AM 8.5 and sighing wistfully every time I read about cool new doodads like porcelain and relationships.
