Wesley Grandmont III has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Really looking forward to working on this challenge over the next few months. I’ll post some sketches soon!

#3

This is the initial sketch for my entry. I went through several ideas before settling on this one which I feel has the epic and grand quality I hope to go for. The sketch is more about the idea at this point. I fully intend to play with composition, placement, etc. once I begin buidling up the proxy geometry in the scene. Definitely some H.P. Lovecraft influence here, I plan to spend a seperate design session working out the details of the creature and ship designs.

Here I’ve started to experiment with the overall value I’d like to have in the piece. The sun will be the brightest area of the image as it peaks around the planet.

#5

Experimenting with color in the concept image to help determine where I’d like to go with the lighting and texturing in 3D. Not really happy with any of these permutations, but it sparked some ideas for future investigation.

Incidentally, a little back story to this image…The scene depicts the last desperate struggle of the Human Fleet to defeat a planet devouring race of galactic parasites. As the parasites attack the last stronghold of human civilization, the fleet sends a lone ship into the alien mother-Hive to deliver a deadly biological weapon…humanities last hope to save their world from total destruction.

Spent some more time working out the composition. Decided to go with a paper-back book jacket style layout. Introduced a foreground ship element to help add depth to the image. Also still trying to work out the lighting and spent time designing the parasite creature. At this point I’ll start laying things out in 3D. This will be an interesting project since I’m a long time Maya user (games work)and recently purchased XSI Foundation for home. I’ll be using this project to ramp-up on XSI, should be an interesting journey

#7

Very cool concept. I like it.

#8

Very sweet I like it, somthing about a giant space worm attacking a planet is just very cool

Can’t wait to see more.

Also I too just started looking into XSI,though I’ll be sticking with Lightwave for this challange

#9

nice scetch - what kind of weapon has the worm to defend it self or is it
a victim?

#10

Lovely concept. I like the bug. I think the first sketches got a more dramatic view. The last one looks a litte flat and disconnecte from the action.

#11

Is the worm going to be somewhat transluscent? That would look cool.

#12

What a mind-blowing concept, a planet sized parasite. I like you illustrative style and palette, very effective. It’ll be interesting to see where you take this. I’d personally try to achieve a more menacing feel to the final image, it’s looks overlit at the moment which makes the monster appear passive. However, you could take the flipside of this and say that it’s the defending force who are the monsters, harpooning the beast like whale hunters. Good luck…I’ll watch for more developments.

#13

Thanks everyone for the comments. I do think it will end up being a much more contrasty peice, but I was reluctant to take it that far in the concept stage. It’s easier to play with the lighting in 3D, but I at least wanted to get an idea of the general mood first. Starting to work on the parasite worm now. Check back later!

#14

Nice use of color. I get a very HOMEWORLD2 feeling. These are beatiful backgrounds. What kind of story do you have going for the comp?

#15

I like your work man. Nice drawings…I would just suggest increasing the interest point. I just feel that something is missing. I wish I knew what it was…sorry. Good luck on modeling

#16

there’s something interesting and different about this one… good work
