Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Ross Nicolson
Hey Folks
Kinda new here but thought I’d take part in this amazing comp.
Best of luck to everyone ![]()
Ross
Concept sketches should be coming soon!
Welcome aboard ross_coe! Always good to see people giving these challenges a go. It’s worth the effort all the way! Good luck.
Thanks for the welcome there erilaz
Glad you like my site too. And good luck also for the competition.
I’m just working on a backstory for my idea at the moment…so I’ll post that soon and then get working on some concept art ![]()
Been working on a backstory
so here it is:
First through the Gate
Scenario
The Leader of the Military Council, General Hirataak, attends the opening of a huge hyperspace Gate. The Gate was designed to transport the entire population to the new Homeworld. The General is accompanied by a number of his top advisors.
The first craft to take the trip are cargo ships and supply ships, taking all the vital building elements to the new Homeworld before engineers and technicians can be sent.
The event takes place on the orbital city of Kaolaan. Thousands of members of the public attend the ceremony and are seated in large stands, but millions more watch from various viewpoints all across the city - each person here to witness one of the most important days in History.
Back-story
The City
The orbital city of Kaolaan was constructed when the planet of Kaoraam became too unstable to support the lives of its population. Volcanic activity increased, and the planet surface slowly changed from a living world into a burning landscape of lava lakes and treacherous heated vents. Any signs of the civilization that once inhabited the planet were swallowed in the ever changing flowing fires of the surface.
So in a move of desperation, the population was relocated into the orbital city. Kaolaan is in essence a warped jagged ring shape that circled the planet, miles and miles above the surface in the vacuum of space. The city is made up of large town structures, situated at intervals and linked by an infrastructure of transit systems, supply routes and energy conduits. Each town structure has its own industries - shops, hospitals, schools, as well as botanic gardens, farm complexes, and many others. Dialects and ethnic groups also change slightly the further round the city one travels.
As a means of supplying the city with energy, power plant structures are also scattered at various locations around the city. From these plants, large pipes connect to the planet surface, tapping into the heat of the volcanic activity below, and transporting raw materials to processing factories for use in building and construction.
The Government
Over hundreds of years power has shifted numerous times on the orbital city of Kaolaan. When the population was first moved, the city was run by a Central Democratic Constitution. Then power was localized into certain areas, as different ethnic groups demanded independence from Central Government. Eventually a Dictator took control of one area, and decided that he wanted supremacy over the entire orbital city. After millions of lives were lost, the Dictator eventually got what he wanted, and ruled with an iron fisted for many decades. Upon his death his Military Council took charge, and changed the city into a semi-democratic state, in which a Leader was elected from the highest ranking military personnel. While this system was not entirely welcomed by the people, it did bring a new age of relative freedom and prosperity for all around the orbital city. 23 different Leaders passed before General Olarat Hirataak was elected to office.
Building the Gate
During the time that the orbital city has been in use and the people have tapped into resources on the planet below, the volcanic activity has slowly been diminishing. But since General Hirataak took power, the planet started to cool at an alarming rate. The General’s top scientific advisors estimated that the planet would be completely dead within the next 25 years, and that the atmosphere would remain too sulphuric for any kind of relocation onto the planet’s surface. So the Military council made evacuation their number one priority.
A special commission was set up, run by the best scientific minds on Kaolaan, to devise a way of getting the entire population to a new Homeworld before the end of the 25 year deadline. They theorized that sub-space travel might be possible with the aid of a huge Gate that could harness a relatively small amount of energy and amplify it millions of times - hopefully enough to rip a hole in hyperspace. This hole could be projected to coordinates anywhere within the universe, thereby safely transporting vessels to a specific location.
Construction soon began of the Gate. At the same time the search began for a habitable planet that could be a potential new home. While it wasn’t possible to send out probes into the depths of space to inspect any possible candidates, scientists instead used new techniques to search the skies for signs of planetary systems, and to then quickly determine whether or not these systems had planets with breathable atmospheres.
5 years passed, and the Gate was half way through its construction, before a selection of planets were finally found that would be ideal for the entire population to move to. Each planet would have to be inspected once the Gate was complete, with probes being sent through to take a detailed analysis of each planet and its system.
Another 5 years passed, and the Gate was finally complete. Scientists sent numerous probes through, each making successful leaps to the potential new Homeworlds and sending back vital information. After months of analysis, discussion, and preparation, the exact location of the new Homeworld was announced to the public. And the date of the first craft to set out through the gate was set for 3 months time. This date would be one of the most important dates in History.
The first crafts to be launched through the Gate would be cargo and supply ships, taking building materials and fuel to the new Homeworld. These ships would make a number of trips before vast numbers of engineers and technicians could be sent to start building settlements, factories, power plants, and all manner of things. It would be at least 5 more years before the rest of the population would be able to travel through the Gate to their new Home.
NOTES: I was originally gonna make them evacuate on an Ark type space ship, but I noticed someone else was doing something similar so I changed it to a hyperspace gate.
C&C welcome
