Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Roger Cotton

#21

Jim! It’s I, the real Carnage Asada! Good to hear from you guys! Tell Ivan he’s gonna get fragged.

Your scene is outrageous, Jim! Of course. You are a space scene genius.

DarrinH> I appreciate the comments about composition. I agree. It is problematic. The way I wanted to pose the hero makes it impossible to angle him any more than I already am. Plus, it causes the advancing guardsmen to be too far away. I am going to try a different approach in the scene, as far as posing is concerned. And, I’m losing the wings. They are causing more problems than I think they’re worth.

Kragh> Great comments. I have been drawing different concepts for the Guardsmen’s uniform. But, each time I do a concept, I think, “nah, too much like BUz Lightyear…” “too much like Judge Dredd…” “too much like Thunderbirds…” etc., etc.

I may decide to skip the Greco-themed costuming, because it is just too derivative of a lot of sci-fi. I want to do a style that really captures my idea of the romance in Space Opera.

So, taking my inspiration from a book I once read, I am doing a hybrid Spanish Renaissance / futuristic style costume. The hero would be armed with an energy rapier (with an ornate basket hilt) and a sardonic smile, as he stands with his arms wide open in a relaxed manner. His former Guardsmen comrades will be at close quarters, in more dynamic poses, practically skewering him.

I would change the composition of the scene so the camera is behind the Emperor. I will position the Emperor leaning forward, looking down at the rebellious Guardsman, as he pounds his throne armrest with a clenched fist. The camera angle will be downward a bit, but I will be adding high reflectivity to the throne room tiles, in order to reflect the cityscape outside the giant windows.

Nomad> I may add a space scene blended into part of the overall image (IF I possible find the time to even complete what I have left to do).

Let me know what you guys think of the costuming. I’m going to play with it a bit, but first I’m going to move on to concepting out the architecture.

In this design, the Guardsmen would have metallic ruffs, breastplate with circuitry, slash-sleeved blouse, long gloves and boots, an insanely ornate codpiece, and a short cape. Perhaps it would have a sash of medals across his chest.

I am going to create an Art Deco style Guardsman uniform next, because I love that style, and it would be another great style to fuse into a sci-fi scene.

#23

OK i want to watch this thread, i LOVE the cyber angel idea

#24

Just for you, Ryder.

Man, I am NOT a concept artist… It’s damned hard to do. Ah well. I’ll settle for admiring the work of those who are concept artists, and who do truly great pieces of art.

Glad you like it, I dunno about the genius part, though

Jim! It’s I, the real Carnage Asada! Good to hear from you guys! Tell Ivan he’s gonna get fragged.

I’ll tell Ivan  He’s working at the school now as 4th quarter T.A. (no not T and A, just TA thank god  ) Dude you need to vacation this way some time, and if you do happen to stop by bring your Hardrive <sound of shot gun pump action> for a little after class get together  we won’t tell El Jeffe we got a non staffer playing games off the system  (new rule it’s been horrible, how can a man let the students know who’s boss if he can’t kill them proper?)

BTW I marked your thread so WATCH OUT! I’ll be watching you

like I said earlyer I do like the concept! but make the king the king of hell so he has bat wings and inexplicable fire and smoke rising up from around him and his chair  it’s a great excuse for lighting hot and cold as well

#26

I’m watching yours and a few others. This is fun, even though I feel like I am nowhere near the competitive level I would like to be.

Which costuming motif do you think works best so far?

#27

#2 more hero like. This kinda reminds me of a concept peice by Ralf McQuarrie for the Orgional starwars peice of the SW gange before Luke was a man  I kinda wished that they took that rout in these new movies with the costume design.

Ok so Roger is still Alive and Kickin’ and Jim is still annihilating with his Ultra Detailistic space vehicles. Funny I bumped into you Jim the night after I saw your entry on here. Oh BTW Roger its Wesley (DAVE school)…Great set up for the scene can’t wait to see it unfold. Hope all is well with you. Get in touch with me if you have a chance.

Wes, you disc-spinnin animator! Good to hear from you, too! I proud to see you’re working in the biz. Good job!

I’m doing work at Sony Computer Ent, so I’ve hardly had time to work on this project. I’ve modeled a rough form of a starship for the scene. I’ll post it later.

Roger

Looking good - dont worry about the designing part, I’m also struggling at it. Keep doodling and things eventually come together. I like the second last drawing more than the last…

#31

I wanted to take a break from thinking about the costuming.

Here’s a 3D concept render of the ship I’d like to model for part of the finished image.

In the next version, the support struts will be curved, and the long pointy structures that will be crystalline weaponry.

#32

Here’s a diagram of where the major components will be modeled.

#33

Oh, you know this “BookMansBlues(James)” personally…Have tried to comment his brilliant work, but he doesn´t understand me…:)(Something about some angles…)

As for the spaceship, I love the fact that everything is there for a reason. I definitely don´t model with reasons at all, only for the visual looks. That´s a mistake. It´s hard to comment the ship much further, as it is still a concept, and lack some details. But the overall design (and reasons for designs) looks interesting!

Btw, thats an interesting color palette for the lightning…have you started thinking of that allready (doesn´t people work these days:)), or is it just for this testrender? -If it is a lightning idea for the projekt, I´ve three comments; 1) it may not be suitable for the story…2) it could be suitable for the story, not in the hall, but as an outside contrast to the palette in the hall. Just an opinion:)…3) Tint the light from above blue, and use this purple color as illumination from the city under the ship.

As for the concept drawings for the guards, I prefer the "Imperial Guardsman Uniform Concept - Renaissance Style", thats neat.

Would you do me a favour? please comment my ship model, no one else has. The reason could be that it sucks(?), but I like it my self. Lost the motivation to work on the ship.
If you do comment it, please speak the truth:)

Keep going:thumbsup:

#34

Jim, not “James”(BookMansBlues)…

#35

Wes, you disc-spinnin animator! Good to hear from you, too! I proud to see you’re working in the biz. Good job!

Thank you Roger, you had a hand in that…so thank you for passing on your knowledge. Not a day goes by on production that I don’t recall “keep notes on all projects” and memories of those handouts with “time spent on”…lol…so I keep a notebook along with my sketch book at work and you were right there are times you do things that later you can’t reproduce w/o those notes. Anyways good stuff so far, definately like the direction you are taking the ship…keep it up…BTW is the Sony Computer Ent. the Division working on “Open Season” ? Take care!!!

Wesley

#36

Kragh, yes, I know Jim. He’s a cocky lil bastard who’s too damned good for his own sake. For as long as I’ve known him, he has had a talent for creating great ships and space scenes. I’ll look at your thread now.

Wes, I’m glad to know something I taught was useful. I’d like to see your work sometime.

I think I will be going with the Renaissance style costuming. I’m modifying the costume concept today.

#37

I started working on fleshing out the particle beam projectors, and adding curvature to the support struts.

The final version will have texture mapping of small panels and hatches, etc. But, I will be modeling most of the details as I go along.

#38

Here’s a full view of the starship with additional detailing to the particle beam projectors.

#39

Here’s a close up view of the particle beam projector. I will add more detailing to certain areas, but it’s pretty much done. I will add textures later to complete it.

#40

Nice Detail…Reminds me of the Retro feel that “Tomorrowland” has here at Walt Disney World (Which I’m a big fan of that style). Great work can’t wait to see it textured.
